Low-carb side effects

Mark,
Google News tonight has a heap of articels about Atkins' diet, most of them "you lose weight because you get bored eating the same stuff".

I'm pretty sure I could have bacon eggs and tomatoes every day for the rest of my life and not get bored (not thinner either).

Was an article in New Scientist a few years ago, in which they did studies of people on low fat diets versus 10-15% fat diets (not anything to do with Atkins, just the low fat thing).

They found that people on 10-15% fat ate fewer total calories, because they felt "fuller" sooner, and were less liekyl to come back a half hour later for a top up.

Guess that just reinforces "all things in moderation"

I have always thought the Atkins diet a bit "radical" - and it's really no shock in any form of medical viewpoint that such a drastic diet change will mess with your qi.

For those with a "cold" body type who can benifit from a decrease in simple carbohydrates I think a much better low carb diet with ZERO side effects is the older, time tested "Scarsdale diet" (get the cheap paperback, the repeated web versions are hacked and incorrect). I lost my first 40 pounds on this diet before finding TCM. I have been this way for 4+ years now and have zero issues and not gaining back. To be honest - at 46 years old I %^$& like a goat, when I can find some...

The Scarsdale diet? Isn't that where you shoot your doctor and end up on bread and water? (Groan . . . old Joan Rivers joke. Remember that Dr. Tarnower's mistress Jean Harris shot him?)

Seriously, I have serious qualms about the low-carb Atkins diet business, because it looks as if people are using it as an excuse to eat meat, meat, meat, nothing but meat. One restaurant owner in Washington, D.C., said she had to enforce a no-substitutions rule in part because diners would ask for a second steak with a steak dinner in place of the baked potato because they were on the Atkins diet. Of course, they also expected to pay the same as for the regular (single) steak dinner, ha ha. Atkins dieters are supposed to be eating fresh veggies as well as the protein, but this message has somehow been lost. And Dr. Atkins ain't quite around anymore to remind us. He was quite overweight when he died.

Overconsumption of protein without enough consumption of the healthy green stuff can lead to major problems in the long run, such as ketosis. Remember the liquid protein diets that were popular some years ago--until people began dying from them?

'zackerly.

There's a vet who practiced here (Ian Billinghurst) who wrote a book called "Give your dog a bone". It's available on Amazon.

He'd analysed the health history of his own pets, and his customers pets, to try to work out when and how they died.

His dogs had little parasite infestation, lived to 15/16 healthily, and generally died of old age.

So did a lot of his customer's dogs.

Others had health problems galore, and died early of cancer/kidneys/infection/parasites etc.

He boiled it down to a "natural" diet, versus a loaded diet.

Natural dogs/wolves foxes eat whatever is there, berries, vegetables, greens and meat. Whatever was available (I've seen foxes eating blackberries)

A balanced diet occured over days or weeks, but it had a bit of everything.

To concentrate on one thing (unless it's beer) to the exclusion of others is going to cause problems.

I guess I'm lucky in that I have a fast metabolism.

When I was 19 I was 5'9' and 150 lbs.At age 45 I weighed 150 lbs.Today I'm 140 lbs. I never thought I would lose any weight because I'm thin to begin with.

I switched over to a low fat higher fiber more nutrishous diet.In stead of bacon and eggs or hotcakes or waffles and sausage , I eat a high fiber cereal with skim milk and fruit and a piece of 12 grain toast with no butter.Just dunk the toast in the milk....Net results were way less calories , less fat and more nutrition.

Lunch I changed to lots of raw fruits and vegatables... A mango , A papaya , Celery stalk , a carrot , some radishes , a hard boiled egg , an apple , a few dates , maybe a tomato and a glass of orange juice... mix it up as different fruits and veggies are in season . all good stuff.

Compared to my old lunch of a baloney sandwich with all the stuff on it ,cheese , mayo , mustard lettuce ... chips , a cupcake , a small salid , a
pudding cup and a coke.

Dinners are way less fat and more nutrition now also.... I also cut out the ice cream or cake and pie & such for dessert. I actually eat as much or more than I did before but I feel better , my weight is down , my BP is down , my cholestrol is down and I have more energy . Now I need to start exercising more.

All I tried to do was isolate where extra fat in my diet was comming from and replace that with a food that has high nutrition , fiber and low or no fat.... No special trick of the week diet but simpley try for the most nutrition possible... BTW
this looks like I'm a vegitarian but belive me I am not...but leaner cuts of meat and certinally cutting the fat off a steak or whatever will help.

I'll admit to being on a low carb diet at the moment. I eat plently of meat, nuts and vegatables(you are supposed to limit it to only green veggies, but I don't limit veggies intake). The key is the vegatables. I've been eating much more vegatables lately in place of bread and pasta, and man I feel sooooooo much better. Man cannot live on meat alone!

When I want to lose weight, I just spend more time on the treadmill in the morning. I find I'm able to still eat pretty much whatever I want, although I do gain weight easier now at age 34 than I did at age 24. But I'm nowhere near overweight, I weighed in at 155.5 this morning, and am 5'8" tall. I actually gained 3lbs over the last couple of weeks (pigged out a lot last weekend plus I've been on holidays this week and ate more fast food than usual)

Jean Harris used a Harrington and Richardson revolver. She claims that after she shot Tarnower, she tried to shoot herself, but the gun would not fire.

That gun must have had a "smart" safety. Point gun at someone else, it fires. Point at yourself, it is "safe".

We used to joke that H&R should have re-named the model she used as the "Jean Harris Signature Model"

We were sickos. We also thought Charter Arms should have renamed its .44 Bulldog the "Son of Sam" Signature Model.

Atkins type diets can be murder if you are prone to gout.

Also very bad news for diabetics, including the millions that are mildly diabetic and undiagnosed. As with all fad diets, go and get advice from a doctor that understands nutrition. I believe most Atkins patient should be getting regular blood tests, but I won't be finding out because my fad diet is called "exercise and eat balanced meals". Quite revolutionary

That's right. We should hunt and gather, eating lots of different things. Of course, these days we have to hunt and gather at the grocery store.

That is the unspoken secret to all of these fad diets. Eat less calories and, surprise, lose weight!

Generally, people losing weight on the Atkins diet are taking in less calories than before they went on the diet.

Of course I know that, but you know the guy was way ahead of his time. For $1 you can get used cheesy paperback and never look at you fat self again. No doubt about it, it's less calories and it certainly isn't 3 dinner rolls with every meal....plus, yes oh MY GAWD it takes a little willpower

imagine that!?!?
