1995 Chevy Monte Carlo Z34 SS. I bought it in 01 with 110,000km for $10k.

In the next two years:

-Power steering line two days after i picked it up, dealer fixed free.

-Alternator died. GM charged $300 for new Alt and 4.4 hours book labour. Alt is under the engine, you have to take some suspension apart. So ~$700.

-Transmission slipping. GM dealer rebuilt in-house. $3000.

-Radiator leaks. Replaced rad. $400.

-Intake manifold gasket leaks. Dealer replaced gaskets and did timing belt service, with water pump etc. $2000.

-During test drive after service new tensioner fails and everything has to be torn down and redone. Another week in the shop. Free.

-Driver side power window fails. While it's in they determine alternator is bad again and replace under the previous one's warranty. $200.

At 133,000km transmission starts slipping again....

Lucky for me I had a 3rd party warranty I bought for $1200 with the car. It covered all of this minus $100 deductible, but come on, it was constantly it the shop.

On top of all this I loved it enough to put a stainless catback, rims, spoiler and a new paint job. I was planning on parking it until I could get the tranny fixed again, but my warranty was expired so I sold it off at a huge loss.

To top it off, it was an "early production" model so it had some part compatibility problems.

I know it's not a "nice car" but for a 19 year old upgrading from an 86 Olds Cutlass, it was quite a step up.

Since, I've had an 88,91 and 93 Honda and have maybe spent $1500 on repairs in the last 4-5 years.

It certainly did break my heart. I see so many cheap Grand Prix GTPs but I can't bring myself to go through that again.

I could not imagine spending 5 grand in repairs, for only two instances in the shop... That's more than 5 of my cars. (purchase price)

(your examples) Trans slipping and IM gasket/timing belt, $5k.

Thank god I know how to work on cars and can do most things myself.

Reminds me of a 1998 Bonneville I had. I had it 3 years and stuck ~$5K into it also. That's the last GM vehicle I'll ever own.

That's the problem when it comes to taking a car to a mechanic unfortunately; one will never come out "ahead". My first car was a 1991 Ford Escort that I learned to work on cars with. The experience was invaluable as I DIY everything now except for tire mounting/balance.

I recently installed a new head gasket on my friends '90 Civic for $36. That was both the headgasket and intake manifold gasket. My guess is a shop would have charged no less than $700.

This wasnt supposed to be a bashing thread. It was supposed to show what foolishness comes with falling in love.

I think you might want to have said that somewhere...

Otherwise 20 people will just jump in....

Some cars are better than others, plain and simple. No manufacturer is immune. GM had issues with fuel pumps and intake gaskets, Ford had issues with head gaskets, Toyota had issues with sludgers, Chrysler had issues with 4spd auto trannys, Honda had issues with 5spd auto trannys, Nissan had issues with fuel injectors, VW had issues with "turbo turds", etc etc.

All of the above problems often happen outside of the factory warranty and can cost thousands to repair. Caveat emptor. There are only a few cars out there that have insanely above average reliability.

Let's face it, the V8 full frame RWD car was inherently a (mostly) reliable design. Due to emissions and CAFE, they had to go away. But paint tech sucked back then, so the cars would rot away before they mechanically failed.

Tell me there's anything more reliable than a moderately tuned Chevy 350ci hooked up to a Turbo 350 tranny.

I have owned nothing but GM and Chrysler vehicles since I started buying cars in 1993, and I haven't spent more than $2,000 total in repairs - not counting normal maintenance. My cars have been a mix of new, used and VERY used vehicles. I can't figure out what some people do to cars...

I have never replaced a tranny, any internal engine repairs, alternator, starter, water pump, fuel pump, coil, computer. I guess I have been lucky since I have only had to replace an O2 sensor, and a couple minor body parts on all of my cars combined.

I hope that GM has learned it's lesson. Since the early 90's, I only heard about the light at the end of the tunnel but I haven't see it. This time around, I really beleive them! With all of the bail out money, restructuring, closing divisions and talks of going under, I hope that GM becomes a strong contender again. With Howie Long doing adds for Chevrolet and mentioning that each Chevy model gets better MPG than the comparable Honda models, this is only a start. Now, GM has to start putting in better parts into their beautiful vehicles. Parts that don't keep breaking. I love the American Car Industry and I want them to be prosperous. Ford seems to be on the right track. I want American reliability to be the best in the world and what American wouldn't!

I hear you OP. My two months with a ford taurus I put in a wheel bearing, hub (other side), strut, muffler, three tires, radiator (6 hour ordeal), and totally patched the metal rocker panels hiding and rusting under the plastic aero covers. Some of the stuff I knew about when I bought it, mostly the other stuff was a suprise.

Car drove darn good and I could see someone who didn't wrench on them liking them.
