Hey guys, I have a 1999 Toyota Tacoma 2.7 4 cylinder 4x4.I got the truck with 80K, did an aoto Rx and I drive 10K per year. The truck has 90K, and I just put in Valvoline Synpower 1K ago. I drive at least 2 short trips back and forth to work, and I climb a pretty steep mountain for about 5 miles each way near where I live every day. When I do go over the mountain the truck gets to normal operating temperature. I occasionally haul my dirtbike around about 9 months out of the year. How often do you think I need to change and should I switch to conventional. Thanks to all replies.

Your gonna get MANY opinions on this.

If It was my truck: I would run that Synpower 5000 miles. Do two oil changes a year and have no worries!!

I'd agree, on a conventional oil, short usage, changes every 3-6 months are golden.

Why not just changes every 3K or 5K miles. If you are driving 10K/year, then 5K or 6 months seems good. Change in the spring and again in the fall.

Otherwise, for a more conservative strategy, every 3K miles or about every 4 months.

i would go at least 7k on synthetic, even with short trips...just a waste of $$$ if you dont....from what i hear COLD weather is toughest on oil

Twice a year, spring and fall. Conventional would be a great choice. Quite a bit cheaper too.

A steep mountain in NJ?

If it's the one I'm thinking of it's called Schooleys Mountain, aka Rt.513 I believe. It not really a mountain in the sense of what you have out west. But it's steep and very windy in sections, though not long. It's "fun" to drive on in the winter

Thanks guys, Yep it's Schooley's mountain. Probably nothing like Wy, But nevertheless it's preety steep and windy and there unfortunately have been quite a few accidents and fatalities. I think I'll go Pennzoil YB and do it at 5K intervals.

I say pick your desired time interval first and then pick an oil that lets you go your anticipated miles in that time. 10k a year = 6mo if you want synth, 4 mo if dino. That's accounting for hard use and a desire to change often enough to clean rather than dirty the engine.
