I bought a house in charlotte years ago, and they made me have it surveyed, which I was surprised because it had sold multiple times and was in a subdivision, so presumably it had been surveyed many times. As I recall it was expensive, and I was broke, so I remember. This is why you always pay for a survey and title insurance. There is no excuse for paying for basic peace of mind.

Last house I bought in Charleston was brand new, and everyone said I did not need a survey. I looked carefully at the plat and i figured OK the area is well defined by the road, and there are the right number of houses and there properly spaced (mine was the last house built on the street), so I figured everyone's is out of place if mine is. In the end I should have just got the survey because I did 6 months later anyway so I could build a fence.
Won't ever buy one without it again. Never have and never will without title insurance either.
