The company I work at has 6000 people working on a given business day between two buildings. They used to have many to door close spots marked EV only. Annoying when one or two empty and I would walk 3-5 football field back to get a spot.

They redid parking lot and took them all away and we have decent amount of EVs. They do have designated spots where they have about 50+ spots with access to free level ii charging.

I guess I don't fully understand, so you had special EV dedicated parking for EVs only close to main office access doors for "common worker work parking". Did these spots have chargers too? Or are they "gifting " choice spots for EV parking? But on a parking lot redo they took them all away so you have to park in a first come first serve parking scenario competing for spot locations like everyone else? Then of course the dedicated charger/charging spots are left open for charging ONLY use. 50 + spots, and free charging too?

When I worked at a Fortune 500 company there were different parts of the lot. The super executives had underground parking, but regular managers had "gold lot" passes. It was a hang tag. A manager left and gifted me his gold lot pass. I got lots of strange looks :ROFLMAO:

Hey, no RSP on BITOG....(Recharging / Sociology / Parking)!

Seriously, those original "EV Only" spots were likely placed close to the building because it made for a shorter run of feeders to the charging stations.
Also, they didn't "take them all away". They were relocated.
Growing pains, for Heaven's sake.

Why should an employer provide dedicated EV parking?
For that matter, why should an employer provide cheap or free EV charging?
Both may be virtue signalling but both are bound to irritate the vast majority of their workforce who drive ICE vehicles.

+1 And it could very well be an insurance and liability issue. In spite of statistics, and what people think and say, or how they compare to ICE fires etc.
The parking spaces are not close at all to building. I feel bad with those with handicap placard as they walk the equivalent of end of supermarket parking lot to front door.

The chargers are only in first floors of parking garages (we have 4)

The campus of two buildings is on 300-400 acres.
Gotcha, thanks for the clarification. My comments would then apply to parking under buildings, or on top as well if something similar were to occur.

Scared of fires most likely answer
This has to be a factor.

But something else comes to mind. Tax laws changed in 2018 that affect employee parking. Without getting into a big, complicated discussion of the changes, some businesses might have realized that they couldn't simply write off as an expense some of the freebies they were providing to employees with EVs. That would explain eliminating EV–only spaces for employees and changing access to charging.

Similar at my workplace. EV charging is close to the building and free. It started many years ago when EVs were somewhat a novelty, and the company thought it would be both PC and trendy, but now there are so many there’s strong competition for charging spots.

Resentment for the free charging has built in the rest of the employees as unfair. There have been rumors the “free” part is going away for a while and I think it should be.

Been going on for years here. Potential candidates ask for it and employers offer it as a perk.
I know of EV owners who say they never charge at home.
