Have seen the increase due to travelers here in the Upstate too. Summertime, I'm refilling 3 feeders about every 5-7 days. Now, about every other day. Have a camera on the big feeder and lots more colorful ones have appeared recently. We are seeing more of them around here.
We have had 2 consistently all summer then today a 3rd showed up, we suspect it’s a traveler as well.Another traveller turned up, that’s the latest ever for us.
I have lots of the little green buzzers - they love my firecrackerHummingbirds have been gone for about a week now. I am in Southern NH at around 43°N Lat.. Been having 80 degree F afternoons in mid September!
Oddly about ten or so paper wasps are making a large nest in our front porch door eave - seems late in the season with nights down to high 40's (F) near dawn. I read now with brood #2 nest some queen breeding is happening prior to winter. Interesting to watch. They have been non aggressive so far and I have no plans to destroy them. Live and let live.
Could be the warm weather is fooling the queen into producing eggs. Keep in mind the wasps are fat and happy as long as the grubs produce their sugary secretions that the workers happily eat. As soon as the temp drops, the queen will stop laying, the number of grubs will be lower and and the workers will look for other food and get aggressive.Hummingbirds have been gone for about a week now. Mine stopped showing up a few weeks ago now. Coincidentally around the time we got our new 10 month old yellow lab mix. The yellow jackets have now taken over the hummingbird feeders.Looks like the little guys are headed to Mexico. Here is my last pic. I also have a nice video. Hope to see them next May. Keep your feeders out for the travellers!
