I just purchased a 2020 Hyundai Palisade. The owners manual specifies 5W-30 ACEA A5 oil. I sold a 2015 Audi Q5 TDI and I have several cases of 5W-30 ACEA C3 oil. Can I use this in the Palisade keeping in mind that the Palisade has a GDI engine? Any advice gratefully appreciated. Thanks!

Should be fine IMO. Unless, of course, there is an issue with running a C3 oil based on Hyundai's recommendation.

Lots of Subaru owners are using C3 oils in WRX's and Forester turbos because they want a high HTHS SN 5W-30. Just don't go crazy on an extended interval. For the 2.0DIT Subaru's, 5,000 miles seems to be safe but 6k miles would be pushing it.

Hmmmmm.

Seems the C3 intended for use as catalyst compatible Oil at extended Drain Intervals in Vehicles with all Types of modern Aftertreatment Systems and High Performance Passenger Car & Light Duty Van Gasoline & DI Diesel Engines that are designed to be capable of using Oils with a minimum HTHS Viscosity of 3.5 mPa*s. and the A5 designed to be capable of using Low Viscosity Oils with HTHS Viscosity of 2.9 to 3.5 mPa*s. These Oils are unsuitable for use in certain Engines - consult vehicle-OEM's owner's manual/handbook in case of doubt. --- The C3 seems to be coming in at the thick side right off the bat?

The HTHS and kinematic viscosity aspect is why Subaru turbo owner's like them. Keeps both DPF's and cats happy.

Well, yes you can use this oil in your new car. But, I would advise after your warranty. Hyundai is wanting you to use an A5 5w-30 and your oil is C3 (similar to and B4). As noted the C3 has an HTHS >3.5 where the A5 is <3.5. You might see a slight hit on MPG with the C3 but I doubt it.

I think you'd be fine, but in a brand new car where Pennzoil Platinum, Castrol Edge, and several flavors of Mobil 1 are all A5/B5 oils in 5W-30 for mid-$20s for a 5 quart jug, I wouldn't do it if it were mine and the car were under warranty.

Maybe use your C3 oils as top off when needed or in another car(s)?

I actually didn't buy it. As part of the "dieselgate" settlement, Audi sent me a $500 Visa card. The stipulation was that it had to be used at a VW/Audi dealership. Hence the cases of oil.

Use it! C3 is going to do fine since US now has ULSG.

First , congrats on the new Palisade ! ... Mobil1 5W30 synthetic is a A5/B5 rated oil as well as Pennzoil Platinum 5W30 synthetic ... I believe they are the only off the shelf , easy to obtain oils from WM that meet the Palisade oil specification requirement .

If you're wanting to follow the warranty requirements to the letter, do not do it. Use a proper A5/B5 5w-30. However, from a lubrication perspective, the C3 oil is perfectly serviceable and suitable for use. Despite there being ULSG, if I were using it, I'd still be cautious about oil change interval given the tendency of GDI to dilute the oil.

How ya liking the new ride? Saw one up close the other day and I loved it...I wasn't able to drive it but man I loved the looks inside and out. Did you choose the Palisade over the Telluride? If yes, what pushed you to the Palisade???

New vehicle. I would definitely run the manufactures required oil. I see no compelling reason to deviate from the manufactures throughout the vehicles life. Ed

Yes you can.

I would use Mobil ESP 5w30 or Rotella multi-vehicle 5w30 or Mobil 1 high mileage 10w30.
If you want to use an ILSAC then QUSD 10w30.

Thinking about it, I guess I actually did buy it but I used Audi's money.

I actually had a deposit on a Telluride but then the Palisade became available and I got the Limited. There is more technology in the Palisade. It gives up nothing to the Telluride except about 3 cu ft of space in the rear. I don't particularly like the front end of the Palisade but but I have a wife I try to keep happy. She preferred the Palisade look over the "gangster" look of the Telluride. Plus she hated the black wheels in the top trim level of the Telluride and the dealer said take it or leave it. No other option available. I left it!
I did look at the Audi Q7 to replace the Q5 TDI that I had but to get the same options as the Palisade, I would have had to pay $22,000 more.
