ARRRRGH! why does this have to be soooo difficult?!?!

Anyway, since my GF and i have decided to purchase our own printer/scanner/copier, I have been reviewing several online reviews. Obviously they all tell me that they all have their benefits and drawbacks.

Im looking for something that can scan a document, even AFTER the ink has run out. does anyone know of one that has this capability? It seems like they all make them so that they stop working all functions as soon as the ink dries/runs out.

thanks in advance

we have an HP Photosmart D110 series that has been trouble free for about 2 years now. it's got a touch screen and wireless connection. i've never tried scanning anything when it's been out of ink but i know when you scan something the image will load on your computer before you tell it to print so i'm sure you could save the image or whatever you wanted to do with it

An idea I have just had is a little archaic, but involves purchasing one dedicated printer, and one scanner. That way I will no have a problem scanning when I only want to scan something. Sure there's the downside of having 2 machines, but at least the inconvenince of running out of ink rendering the whole setup useless is not an issue.

The only problem I can think of when using this setup is the compatability of the scanner to the printer. If I scan a document into the scanner, will I be able to print it on the printer? Anyone who's running a scanner can answer if you get the option to print, after you've scanned something.

Any other downsides anyone can think of with this setup?

Depending on the software you use.

The canon above comes with a free version of photoshop elements, Which will let you do that.

I have a Canon MX870 AIO that will indeed scan when the ink runs out. Right now it's screaming "Ink Out" since the cartridges are chipped with ink-level monitors and were refilled. Still works just fine with the refilled cartridges.

Scanning quality is good. Printing is good, but slow. That's no big deal, my other Canon printer is used for heavy printing tasks since it's much cheaper to run, and much faster at printing B&W pages.

I have a Dell 910 or 920 "all-in-one" (rebadged Lexmark) from about 2004. It hasn't had ink in it for about 4 years now and is relegated to scanning duty only.

I bought a Brother network laser printer about 4 years ago for $89. I'm on a second Brother (23ppm, 32MB onboard memory so it will swallow graphics heavy pages without a hiccup, ethernet or wifi networking or direct print via wifi) I bought for $89 because after 13000 pages, the drums need to be replaced on these units and the drums cost about $70 so for $20 more you can get a whole new printer with new drum and starter toner good for about 1500 pages. Toner costs about $30 (generics work just fine) and will do 3000 pages.

If I need to "copy" something. I just scan it as a PDF using the Dell software and print the PDF file.

Unless you absolutely must have color, a b&w laser with a separate scanner (or old inkjet that still has a functioning scanner) is your best route. Works out to about 1 cent per page for me and since I do a reasonable volume of printing I won't use an inkjet.

I have the MX870 as well and really like it. It has separate ink tanks. I have a laser for most text printing, but I use this for color printing, scanning, and the occasional fax.

My wife and I just got a HP OfficeJet 6500. It's an all-in-one with network capability. It's been alright so far. Reasonably priced on Amazon for about $100.

You will get a 100 recommendations....

I had a trio of HP 4110, 4215 and 4325s that lasted 8 years....

recently I got a couple Epson Workforce 630's that Office depot was giving away (< half price) they seem to be pretty cool.

Unfortunately, unless you got for the $1000 corporate versions, they are all junk...just some junk better than others.
