I hadn't seen a post on this here so figured I would. Seems not many are interested, and I can understand why. However they might be interested shortly - because apparently Costco is already out of toilet paper, so maybe people care shortly. Do we even import toilet paper? Sounds like something we would make here?

Anyway, the big ports in Asia are almost completely automated, the automated cranes lift the containers, stack them on automated vehicles that move them where another automated crane re-stacks them. I guess people watch over this on CCTV but no real longshoreman around. So there fighting against automating the ports here and a big payday. Given the proximity to Nov 5th, and the fact that 75% of the containers that come here depart again empty, I think they will have a lot of support. Anything that hurts the CCP I am happy to support.

Anyway, you might want to get some TP on the way home?

I don't believe we import toilet paper (or much that's wood-based). I thought it all comes from northern states or Canada. Well, Canada would be an "import" technically or maybe not because of USMCA, but it wouldn't come in via ocean ports anyway.

I filled up all gas tanks in my vehicles. We get our gas from Port Canaveral.

I’m not worried about the imported crap at Chinamart.
Hmm, interesting. I didn't think about shipping fuel on the East coast. We have the big pipeline, but we also have a Kinder Morgan tank facility that takes refined fuel in by boat - I think diesel mostly?

I used to work with a former LEO who had worked much of his life around the docks of Los Angeles. I still remember him telling me that the unionized dock workers were probably the laziest workers he'd ever encountered.

I love how this spokesperson ‐‐ who sounds like a wise guy for Gotti -- is screaming about making Americans feel the pain right now as part of our nation is in dire need from flooding.

If you haven't heard the audio clips of this jerkwad, check it out.

People are entitled to fair pay and to unionize, but you don't have to be smug and excited about making your own nation suffer further.

Are any longshoremen involved in the shipment of petroleum or LNG?

There was a major policy push in the early 1900s to replace coal with oil for power plants, ships, and railroads. One reason for it was to reduce the influence of unions.

The government says no. So only your Chinese trinkets I guess. In which case I hope it lasts a very long time.

"The strike at these ports will not impact crude oil, gasoline, natural gas, and other liquid fuel exports and imports, as such operations are handled by other workers."

I really enjoyed my drive to work this morning, only 2 semi trucks (one amazon and one a fedex double). The normal number would be 100. I, unfortunately, live right next to one of these ports and the truck drivers are generally aholes. The locals are taxed/tolled for the new road facilities/tunnels to serve the ports, no upside to the locals, just busted up roads and trucks that think traffic lights are a mere suggestion.

Hopefully there’s no impact….. but I’m expecting those other workers also wanting more $$$.
