Hello all, I have been lurking on bitog for several years now, and figured I should finally join. As for a little about myself, I have been a mechanic at a GM dealership for 2 years now while I am finishing up my college degree. Until I stumbled on this forum I didn't even know what a UOA or VOA was. I currently have 2 vehicles, a 96 Grand Cherokee and a 07 Supercharged Cobalt SS. My oil and filter of choice for the Jeep is Rotella T5 10W-30 and Mopar filter. As for the Cobalt, I use Mobil 1 5W-30 and AcDelco filter. My oci for the Cobalt is 3k miles, it might be a little overkill, but I run the car really hard when I drive it (and I do race it), it's not stock (smaller pulley, bigger injectors, exhaust) and I feel it is cheap insurance. The Jeep gets a 5k mile oci. However, my mother has a 2008 Pathfinder and has done 7.5k mile oci since new with Mobil 1 and switched to Mobil 1 HM at 100k, she's now at 290k miles. Seeing her track record makes me reconsider my oci whenever I start commuting to the city.

I think your oil change intervals are good. Gm engines like to throw off extra copper/iron/lead when ran hard so draining the oil before it gets extra abrasive is a good idea for that type of driving.

If you were doing more highway miles with less hard driving you can certainly follow the oil life monitor.

I'd recommend a Fram Ultra for the cobalt because it has full dual layer microglass media with higher efficiency, flow and holding capacity than the AC Delco, helping it catch smaller wear particles before they get a chance to pass through the system again.

Mobil 1 High Mileage 5w30 would also be a good choice for the cobalt as well, the extra anti wear additives will help with the hard driving and Extra seal conditioners won't hurt a bit, think of it as preventative maintenance for the seals.

Thank you for your info. As far as filters go I flip between AcDelco and Mobil 1, but if the Fram is better I will definitely consider it. I have been considering switching to HM soon, I did in my previous Cobalt and have no complaints at all with it. I like the extra additives and if I'm not mistaken it is a little thicker correct?

I would not use a HM oil in your Colbalt as there is no reason to unless your engine has high mileage issues, which I doubt since you are using M1. M1 5-30 is one of the best 5-30 oils and is very well suited for your Chevy.

+1 Welcome. M1 5w30 or M1 5w30 HM are both great oils. Use either one you would like. M1 5w30 HM will be a little bit thicker. It has a higher HTHS rating than regular M1.

the Fram ultra is a favorite oil filter around here.

I have been accused of lurking and apparently it's considered a dirty, shameful thing. Be glad you already got this skeleton out of the closet just in time for Halloween.

+2

Fram Ultra is favorite here because most posters know what is a good filter and what is not.

For $8-10 a filter nothing can beat Fram Ultra, for a little less money at $5-6 Wix, Fram Tough Guard and NAPA Gold are good buy.

Mobil 1, Bosch distance plus ... are over priced for what they are.
