Wonder if too much efficiency really isnt the best thing... think Dell, Toyota, Wal-Mart.

In fact, I wonder if Wal-Mart pressures have been the cause of much of Dell's demise.

I have to say, my 2000 precision workstation didnt last past 2004 due to bad PS and MB (so the leaky capacitor issue is a valid one to me). My wife's dell latitude has a screen that doesnt always work, and my work dell that Im typing on right now shocks me if I touch two materials on it at once (plus it has had a failed HD, PCMCIA slot and freezes all the time).

Bummer for Dell, but my experiences validate their widespread issues...

I have never had any luck with Dell equipment... I have had Laptops and Desktops and even sold this brand when they used to have Authorized Resellers some years ago.

The new stuff they are churning out seems to be even worse... Thrown together Chinese Junk IMO...

I hope they go under...

Dude you're getting a Dell! Dude, you are going bankrupt!

my friend used to work at dell tech support back in early 2000. he was coached to sell higher end parts when people called for help with a broken part. He always told me to stay away from dell and their proprietary junk.

never a dell again, $1200 lappy went bad in 11 months, dell washed their hands as I bought it. hp, acer etc will suffice my needs for long time.

I hate Dell. Their computers are cheap *** products thrown together and imported from China or Korea. These sorry *** computers and softwares from Microsoft give me more problems than my 2003 Hyundai Elantra GT which is made proudly in Seoul, South Korea. Dell and Microsoft can stick their products.

I've posted this before, but penny pinching from Dell has found its way into their server support offerings. When we have a HD failure in a RAID unit, Dell directs us to "reseat the drive" This is not only a waste of time, but it puts our customers data @ risk. This is also true for DIMM failures. They try to have us "move the DIMM" to see if the error follows the DIMM move. I don't really have time to "make sure" it is a $30 component, nor does our customer have the time for several outages for musical DIMMS. We have paid for the highest level support (5 years up front) and when I call in a HD failure I expect a new drive delivered to the site, not a bunch of debugging baloney.

If there RAID controllers or DIMM sockets are that poorly designed as to have components "work loose" they ought to be addressing that on their end, not pushing the fix onto the customer.

I was thinking about a dell...

I would sleep on it and check the responses on Wednesday night.

On a side note, I have dealt with (2) machines with the cap issues. Right now I'm using a refurb Precision 360 WS from Dell and I'm pretty happy with it.

I think you will find that Dell is sourcing some of its stuff from Foxconn - who likely makes Acer!

Lately I have been happiest with HP and Toshiba.

I have about a half dozen dell optiplex p4 machines in my basement that I have acquired from clients who were going to throw them away. All have cap issues.

I just keep the parts and cases for friends or family that need a hard drive or something for a broken computer..

Me personally, I have not had a problem with a dell. I bought a new Optiplex 360 a year or so back for 500 dollars with a monitor, and I'm pretty happy with it.

My brother bought a low end inspiron notebook, and I noticed that the quaity has slipped quite a bit..

I'm not sure what people expect when they buy a 500 dollar laptop or desktop, anything over 2-3 years is bonus time..

Most machines are pretty disposable after 2-3 years anyways.

Yes, but companies like ASUS, who do a great deal of the OEM work for other well-known brands, don't cut the same corners they are asked to cut in their OEM contracts with their own product lines. I've had phenomenal luck with ASUS notebooks as far as durability and product quality due to this.

DELL is truly a product of their own image.

IIRC they all carry standard 1yr warranties?

Most of our dells are work have no issues going 5+ yrs. Our laptops are used till the point that they literally die and cannot be revived.

I've had issues with HP laptops, and don't care for them.

After the math department at the University of Texas noticed some of its Dell computers failing, Dell examined the machines. The company came up with an unusual reason for the computers’ demise: the school had overtaxed the machines by making them perform difficult math calculations.

That's just appalling. You've overtaxed your F-350 Power Stroke/Chev 3500 Duramax/Dodge 3500 Cummins by towing too often.

Last time I checked, computers were invented to perform difficult math calculations.

I still call it the walmart effect... Cut costs and something has to give... not everyone works for free in the name of "efficiency".

It is funny because my c 2004 IBM, which has gotten FAR more use than my dell laptop, still runs like day 1, whereas my dell just plain stinks.

My c 2008 Mac has also gotten far more travel time and bumps than my dell, and operates perfectly.

This problem affected every player in the industry.

Currently (still) have three HP servers in our recycling queue, about $11,000 each that ALL died due to this stupid problem.

I have a motherboard on display in my office from an HP/Compaq EVO 530 Small Form Factor with leaked caps so I just point to it and say "this is your problem".

It's sad to see them pick on Dell, it's an industry-wide problem and nearly all vendors and suppliers are to blame. We have seen more failures with HP's than Dell units. Not to say Dell didn't have it's problems with this issue...those GX270's were less than ideal computers to say the least.

Our company uses Dell computers (about 12,000 of which I know of 400 in our department) and there have not been any failures to speak of.

My company uses Dell computers and we've had lots of failures, mainly with the Optiplex GX280.

Most of those have been replaced because the lease has long expired.

Funny thing is I have quite a few Optiplex GX280's in our storage, and quite a few of them still work. I haven't found any with leaky caps yet, but maybe we got lucky on ours.

I'm not saying Dells are perfect either. I've run into my fair share of issues with all manufacturers.
