Local governments can be real money grubbers

In Calgary ALL the school zones have been turned into playground zones that are in effect from 7:30am to 9pm EVERY day. Apparently it was too much effort to know the times that school zones were in effect so they just made one type of zone. In my mind it was an effective way to weed out those who shouldn't be driving anyway...we have plenty of those.

They got rid of the red light cameras here. Found a rule about being able to cross exam your accuser which can't happen with a machine.

Anyway a guy I know would make a right on a red almost every morning where they put up a new camera. Guess he didn't completey stop when he did.

It got him about 20 times in a month.

Each ticket was over $900.

Went to court and go it reduced to $5000 for all 20 tickets

I've never seen a speeding camera for giving tickets thankfully..

Well if it were 55 I wouldn't have received a ticket. GA doesn't ticket for less than 10 mph over. Especially on highway. So as I said irrelevant.

Exactly ^^^^^^^^^

Hell I talked with local state county police and state police officers who came to the gym I worked at…
They ALL said 62 in a 55 on Rte 17 in the rural part of the county was NO big deal…

65 or more the county guys told me and one state trooper told me 69 mph or more would get him to go out and pull someone over.

They're doing red light cameras here in Napa again. Apparently there used to be some but it was discontinued a few years ago. Now they're back. Whether or not it's positive or negative is a complex discussion with many perspectives. All I know, the companies that are installing and managing these systems are the ones benefiting the most.

Exactly right . ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

When the city of Petersburg and Richmond started “ losing “ money because people started being better about the stop lights…

That third party company still had their big money contract that THEY got paid for… By the tax of those cities.

The fact that big insurance companies buy radar and laser guns and hand them out to LEO is a conflict also. But its common.

So I missed the 35MPH sign, hidden behind a tree in your designed speed trap, so now I am a bigger insurance risk? Not likely.

Been in your shoes. Was going 45, my wife mentioned it was a school zone (rural road) and that the limit was 20. I responded “it’s 9:30pm on a Sunday night, the babies are screaming, and it’s Christmas break, I’m like 99% sure that doesn’t apply” and as soon as I said that red and blues lit up.

Thankfully only a verbal warning (my wife made it a point to tell the cop she told me to slow down). The sign has subsequently been changed to “20mph when children present” after the town about mutinied over it.

That's often how it is in Maine, too. Makes the drivers look for kids. Which is the whole point.
Which *should be* the whole point but rarely is. I've never seen kids on the road at the schools near where I live. Afterall, the kids load on the buses without crossing the road (duh) and car line doesn't require kids to cross the road (duh) and no one walks (miles) home from school.

A decent place to install cameras are on school buses where the driver can push a button to take a picture of someone passing the bus (2 lane) when kids are getting off the bus, etc.

I recieved a speed camera ticket in the mail a few weeks after a trip to France. Mailed all the way to USA. It was 45 euros, paid it online. Not a clue where it got me.

The confusion in France is the interstate has a standard speed, unless a sign reduces it. Then there are digital signs that frequently change.

So you were speeding regardless.

Don't want a ticket, follow the speed limit. Simple stuff.

Otherwise don't complain when you get caught or the method that caught you...

And before anyone says it, yes, I do drive over the speed limit in some circumstances, but if i was caught I wouldn't complain about it. Known consequences for my actions and all...
Last speeding ticket I get was over 20 years ago. I got caught going 81 in a 55 by a CHP using rolling radar. I was polite and respectful, took my sunglasses off and looked him in the eye during our convo, and openly admitted driving in the "high 70s and not having an excuse".

Got cited for 65 in a 55. It pays to be nice to people.

Our county government got rid of the school speed cameras. The local politicians voted yes for the cameras they were finally installed and running a couple of months before election day. People were up in arms getting $200 tickets in the mail suddenly it disappeared they were suddenly falling deep in the polls

Exactly. I got pulled over last year for not completely stopping at a stop sign in town. Apparently there were complaints about people not stopping there and lucky me, I pushed it a bit and got to chat with the officer watching the intersection. No attitude, he explained why he was there and I said that I knew I pushed things a bit and since we were talking, I guess I pushed the stop more than I thought. I got a warning and that was that.
