1971 Chevy Impala fist car ran great but my father sold it and
bought me that ugly Gremlin when gas prices went up....Chevy had
a 400 4 barrel and and got 12 miles per gallon.
1972 - Gremlin is butt-ugly IMHO but never any problems.
1970 - Buick Skylark GS 455- ran like a bat-out-[censored] but auto trans went and sold it it for 500 bucks like a dumb-[censored]
I would give my left you know what to have it back.
1980 GMC 1500 truck with a inline six ...lost to wife in divorce
after 6 months
1979 Chevy Chevette - bought used and engine blew up traded
for a new 82 Toyota Truck and this began my love affair with Toyota that continues to this day.
82 Toyota truck.....drove to 210k miles and sold to friend for his son to learn to drive....he crashed it 2 months later.
1991 Toyota Corolla ..rove to 155k miles and traded for 96 Camry
1996 Toyota Camry drove it to 110k miles and traded for a 2002 Highlander
2002 Toyota Highlander - had 70k miles and Stole for a Fry's food store parking lot. replaced with another Highlander in 2007
2007 Highlander....still sticking with 2.4 chain timing belt engine...used Mobil 1 since 1k oil change...only 20k miles on
it...my wife loves these Highlanders. Gets pretty good MPG too

We are retired now....I was lucky and stopped working at 50 in 2007 ..I hope this Highlander last the rest of my life!
If I had to buy another car Im sure it would be Toyota/Lexus...
however I dont think they are as good as they were back in 80's
up to about 95 or so.
A good car is like a Rolex watch or Colt revolver....
I bought a Rolex GMT back in 1982 and have sent it back to Rolex
4 times for cleaning and repair....it comes back looking like new and runs perfect....soon it will be 30 years old and would not trade it for anything...most all cars as so throw away these days. Thanks for reading my long car story.

Fairly short list...

1996 Chevy Cavalier LS. Owned it for about 2,000 miles/6 months if I remember right. I hated that car.
1998 Nissan Altima GXE. Owned it for about 10,000 miles/2 years. Great car, would own another in a heartbeat.
1995 Acura Integra LS. I've had it for about 2.5 years now, and I've put on approximately 32,000 miles. Awesome car, but repairs are expensive and the suspension/brakes can be problematic. Great drivetrain, very fun to drive, looks timeless.

No worries... I'm trying to find the thread for you so you can see the posts... Was pretty long.

It's funny to see how people transition brands over time, though.

Growing up we had a:

GM Station Wagon - Died at unknown mileage in junkyard
Ford Maverick - Ditto. First and only experiences with "starting fluid"
1984 Dodge Omni - Good car. Two adults and four kids fit in it.
1988 Dodge Caravan, 2.5/3speed auto. Good car. Died at 188,000.
198x Mercury Capri - So horrible my parents still won't buy another American car. (car was Aussie, problems were American)
199x Geo Metro - Died in Accident
1996 Camry - Still going at 284,000 miles, Dad wants 300 thou bad.
2001 Solara - Way behind at ~140,000 miles

My Cars:
1986 Honda Civic - Died in accident at ~140,000
1992 Toyota Corolla - Clutch and car died at 213,000 miles. Best car ever owned. Engine was like new at the end of it.
2001 Accord 2.3 - Sold for Highlander when I had kids (it was a 2door) only 19 dollars in parts over 113,000 miles (fuel door release froze)
2003 Civic 1.8 - Sold for Accord when our second came around. Quality issues made me consider Ford Fusion, but still bought another Honda.
2004 Highlander 2.4 - Not much eventful in the first 60,000 miles
2006 Accord 2.4 - Even less exciting news.

I'll stick with the current ones:

2003 & 2004 Chevy Cavalier(s) 4dr, 2dr

2006 Chevy Cobalt LS 2dr

GN since I was 17. Daily driver until '05. Current.
'86 T-type sold
'87 Celica beater died at 230,000
'06 TL current daily driver.

Wow this is hard.

66 Ford Falcon
70 Plymouth Duster
72 Mustang
70 Maverick
67 Fairlane
72 Plymouth Satellite
74 Chevy Surburban
76 Granada
80 Caprice Wagon?
70 Chevy Van C-10 IIRC
76 Dodge Van Slant 6 Biggest POS I ever owned
84 E-150
85 E-150
87 E-150
88 E-150 Still driving
87 Buick Century
93 Aerostar Still driving
95 Caprice Classic Second Biggest POS I ever owned
08- Jeep Liberty

I had good luck with all the Fords. The 72 Satellite was a nice car, the 318 with the Torque Flite AT was a nice set up. The Surburban and Caprice Wagon were reliable, but the 95 Caprice Classic got me hating GM. The Dodge van and the Duster both had the 225 Slant 6, and until this day I can't understand why people liked that engine, they both SUCKED!

I lost all respect for Chrysler because of them, but regained it when I bought the Jeep. The Buick Century with the 3.8L engine was a great car, but everywhere I parked it someone would crash into it. I never owned anything that didn't wear an American logo.

I might have missed a car or two, its been a long time.

I feel bad for not buying American cars but I had my fill in late 70's and early 80's and never looked back...
The only really good American car I had was an AMC Gremlin
thats sad with all jokes about AMC I guess they pretty good cars

1976 Chevy K-10 P/U - Given to us by Grandparents when I was 12 or so. Grandfather bought new in 76. Still drive it (needs body work for rust)
1998 Chevy K1500 Z71 Ext. Cab- Bought new in college. Sold to dad at 110K miles. Dad still drives it. LIM Gaskets replaced
2002 Chevy Camaro SS 6spd - Bought after college when I got a job. Sold with 22K shortly after I got married..
2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7- Bought new. Good powertrain but the thing nickled and dimed me with airbag system failures. Turned me off to Chrysler. Traded in.
1992 Ford Taurus GL Vulcan- Given to me by Grandmother. Very good car, and pretty good on gas. Turned me on to Ford products. Sold at 96K running strong on orig transmission.
2007 Mercury Montego- Traded Jeep in for it. Bought used w/36K miles. Nice car with good gas mileage and very roomy. Wife's car.
1996 Chevy Tahoe LT- Recived from my parents w/170K miles. Only owned for about a year. LIM gaskets were replaced and were leaking again. Traded in.
2009 Ford Escape V6 XLT- Almost 2 months old. Traded in Tahoe for it. Excellent power and mileage. Daily Driver.

2004 Honda Civic VP coupe - early death on 12/08 with 41k miles
2002 Nissan Maxima SE - bought with 79k miles 02/09. Getting close to 84k miles

PAST RIDES:
1978 FORD PINTO(that engineer is/will burn in the pit for that one)
1986 FORD T-BIRD TURBO(my last Ford car)
1981 Toyota Corolla Wagon( why did I sell it)
1987 Toyota truck(sold it with 250K because of new baby)
1988 Toyota Camry(sold it to buy a newer ride 235K on it.
1994 Toyota Camry(turned it in at lease end-my 1st & last lease)
1991 Honda Civic LX (paid 1500 and sold it for 2995 with 167K )
1992 Toyota Corolla sedan(paid $100 for it& put 500 in parts in it and am still letting my college daughter drive it with 185K on it)
1988 F-250 Granny gear 4spd with 300six. Without a doubt that thing pulled it's own weight and then some.(sold it with 150K)
2003 Toyota Tacoma double-cab 4X4.(Stupidly sold it and am still kicking my tail for it 35K on it)
1998 Toyota Tacoma EXT cab 4X4(installed TRD supercharger, header system&exhaust, injectors. Gas went to $4.50 a gallon and it got about 11MPG with your foot in it so it had to go)
2003 Honda Accord EX (it has been flawless with only 90K on it)
1991 Volvo 240DL sedan(one of the ten all-time best engines ever made by anybody. Just don't be in a hurry to go anywhere. I still have her and she only has 130K on it)
2005 Honda Accord LX 5spd (this car is so much fun to drive considering it's a people mover. 35MPG helps too. Best Honda engine so far)
I saved the best for last. It's the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned.
1981 Toyota Truck 4X4(still has the original engine/trans/differentials with the only engine repair being a head gasket/valve-job. Still uses NO oil and yes it really does have 645,000 miles on it. The body will rust off before this truck quits. It gets Schaeffer 9000 every 4-5K with no added oil between changes. I wish they still made this truck. I'd pay for a new one like it.
1984 Chevy Cavalier(My inlaws gave me that thing when I married their daughter. It was the first clear sign that they hated me. It had to go in short order.)

My old girl-friend turned wife then divorced had a 83? Cavalier and she called me many time when it a.)would not start b.)stop on fwy when it was 112....I HATED that car more than the ex-wife

To be honest, I've never been a huge slant-fan myself. I always thought the 318 v8 was both tougher and more powerful, and in general got about the same gas mileage.

That said, you'd really have to have owned a late 60s slant-six to see that engine at its best. Starting in the 70s they just choked it with emissions gear and didn't really keep up with needed re-designs in the head, combustion chamber, and manifolding to make it work with emissions gear. They did improve the chambers, heads, etc. with the 318 and 360 and the result was the very reliable, relatively powerful "Magnum" truck engines of the 90s.

Regular drivers:

1968 Ford Ranchero 302- sold with >200k
1973 Plymouth Satellite 318, still own, has 438,000 miles
1979 Mazda B-2000 (scrapped w/ 120k miles couldn't keep the front end or tranny together, rust bucket even in Texas- no more Japanese cars for me)
1966 Dodge Polara (383, later 440) driving it today- 288k miles
1984 Chevy Cavalier 2.0- Wife's car, sold with 150k
1993 Eagle Vision TSi 3,5L- wife's car, sold w/ 257k
2005 PT Cruiser 2.4- 40k, wife's current car
1999 Cherokee 4.0/5-speed - 130k, will be my daughter's car when she gets her full license in the fall... IF I can let go of it, I LOVE the thing!

Hobby cars:
1949 Plymouth Special DeLuxe coupe, 215 flathead
1965 Chrysler 300L, 413 (sold in early 90s, wish I still had it)
1969 Dodge Coronet R/T, 440 Magnum

From 1986 to 2009:

1978 Chevy Monza 2+2 2.5
1986 Honda Civic Si
1985 Olds Calais 3.0
1991 Honda Civic Si
1991 Eagle Talon TSi AWD
1990 Nissan Sentra XE
1993 Plymouth Sundance Duster
1997 Ford Ranger Sportside 2.3
1994 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS
2000 Nissan Sentra GXE
2002 Nissan Altima 3.5 SE
2004 Mazda 3i
1974 VW Beetle
1992 Chevy S-10 2.8
2006 Nissan Frontier CC
2006 Mazdaspeed 6

Possible next: 2011 Ford Fiesta, unless Ford ruins it on its way across the pond.

That might explain it then. The 318 was Great! Those slant 6 engines really sucked, in fact they sucked out loud. If it was going to rain within 48 hours they wouldn't start, both vehicles, owned years apart. The van lacked so much power that I remember having to take a running start to get it up a customers driveway. I never owned or drove one of them from the 60s, that might have changed my opinion of them. I had my fair share of Ford 200 I-6's from the 60's and 70's and they were great.

Thanks for clearing that up!
