Is there a list of Grp IV oils on this site. I want REAL Grp IV BITOG sanctioned PAO base stock oils.

Elf (Some are PAO, some are Group III)
Maxima (Group V)(Some are Group IV)
BMW Castrol 5w30 might be PAO based
Mobil 1 MC oils
Mobil 1 0w-40

I would not be certain about Royal purple. Not knocking it's performance, just a hunch.
Amsoil oils other than XL series, and Redline are pretty certain. GC is certain.
If you have an autozone you have GC, if you have GC that is your most available store bought PAO based oil.
Redline and Amsoil most likely have to be ordered. Which is worthwhile if that level of percformance is desired.

There's the thee most common choices.

Redline is certainly Group V ... and probably some Group IV.

GC is Group IV

Some Amsoil is Group IV.

Mobil 1 and Delvac 1 ~used~ to be Group IV / V but it seems that Mobil 1 may now have cheapened like Castrol did with nearly all of the Syntec line.

I was looking at Wal Mart and Mobil 1 is $6.22 / qt and Mobil 1 Extended Performance is $6.92 / qt. At those prices I feel I should get the good ingredients that Mobil 1 used to have when it cost around $4.00 /qt.

Since I can buy Redline at $7.00 / qt and Redline is way better than Mobil 1....why let Mobil 1 make me feel like they cheated me?

I had initially thought Esso XD-3's 0W30/40 oils were 100% PAO but their Product Data Sheet (Feb 2005) leaves a lot of wiggle room:

Quote:

Esso XD-3 Extra 0W-40 and 0w30 are synthetic since they use polyalphaolefin (PAO) as the basestock

Operative word: "use"

I guess it shouldn't be a surprise that synthetic oils are no longer 100% Group IV, as outlined in Chevron's 2001 article PAO–Down, but not out:

Quote:

"... a 1999 ruling by the National Advertising Division of the Better Business Bureaus broadened the definition of synthetic lubricants to include Group III base stocks. With Group III granted the right to wear the Œsynthetic label - and a cost differential of $1.50 to $2.00 a gallon in favor of Group III most large lubricant producers moved quickly to replace PAO with Group III in their synthetic PCMO formulations."

The indications I have seen was that GC was PAO. Now if you have evidence to the contrary I am sure there are many here that would like to see it.

You show me where it is said to be PAO and I will go eat my shirt.
