It looks like the U.S. product sheet for the LM Leichtlauf High Tech 5W40 was updated recently and the 100 deg viscosity number is a bit lower now, 12.9....used to be 14. What would cause that? I ran a VOA on it a while back and got back a number in the 13s but that's when this was showing 14 as the spec.

Sounds like they've just lightened it up. The VI of 190 points to a reasonable amount of VII being used in the product and the 10% Noack is a bit high for my liking, so it's probably got a pretty light base oil blend would be my guess.

Looks like a very light 40-wt now, similar to M1 0W-40 when it went thru the reformulation.

I think previous Noack was 11%. Really mediocre oil resembling Castrol Edge 5W40.

The Motul 8100 Gen2 5W40 is probably worthy of consideration for these same applications. Higher HT/HS and lower SA. The NOACK is missing from the TDS though.

If I was going for lower SAPS oil, Motul X-Clean 5W40 would be my choice. HTHS is 3.9. That is really, really good result.
Considering KV100 and HTHS, that thing has to have top notch HC base and probably some other stuff in it. I think VW DI engines, X-Clean would be good choice if one wants thick package.
Probably X-Cess would be better for port engines and newer BMW engines like N20 that should pay attention to LL01 considering timing chain issue.

I really like Motul, I have a whole case of their 0w-30 still and nothing to run it in.

@edyvw I've been using this liqui moly oil for years. UOA's always look great from what I understand.

Would you say it's a good idea to switch to Red Line's 10W40 year round in a 2009 535xi?

Was looking to switch because Noack is lower, HTHS is higher and a low CCS @ -25C should mean that this could be used in winter without any issues.

I would if you track your car. Other than that, not sure what is benefit of Redline? It will affect consumption. I mean in the end of the day, that LM is approved for LL01, but IMO, much better options available, including Motul X-Cess etc.

We know the N54 has issues with carbon buildup on the intake valves so I figured if Noack was lower, it may be useful.

Car isn't tracked and mostly does short trips.

I've spent a small fortune @ FCPEuro so their lifetime replacement is a great perk. Better options than LM aren't available.

When you say it'll affect consumption, you're saying more oil will be consumed if switching to 10W40?

Noack helps, but also lower SAPS oils. Redline 10W40 is a SAPS bomb.
I personally would run LL04 oil in it. Thick W30 that has VW504.00/507.00, MB229.51 and LL04. FCP Euro has I think plenty options.
10W40 is definitely not good option for short trips. It will be much thicker at KV40 than W30 oils I mentioned.
