I got my hands on some of this new kendall "liquid titanium" containing oil (the 10w30 hi mileage variety, from pep boys). I noticed the stuff has a strong sulfur smell to it. I'm guessing the liquid ti is titanium sulfide; indeed, "Titanium disulfide has been proposed as a solid lubricant. The coefficient of friction between steel surfaces is .3 compared to .2 for molybdenum disulfide. However, because it does not adhere strongly to metal surfaces, TiS_2 is generally less effective than molybdenum disulfide," according to pg 48 of
http://www.scribd.com/doc/30122929/Titanium-Compounds-Inorganic
.

If it is in fact Ti disulfide, this additive would have one or two things going for it versus moly disulfide. 1. concentration is higher by 3x or more (~1000 ppm according to kendall specs' pdf, vs typically ~300 ppm for typical moly additive fortified oil. And secondly, possibly, 2. slicker coeff of friction is not necessarily superior for antiwear (for example, zddp has a high coeff of friction but is a superior anti wear additive--maybe intuitively once can visualize a spongy springy type of material that would be a great antiwear buffer material between the two hard steel surfaces).

it could be. But this stuff smells strongly of sulfur (about as much as as a can of lubro moly); stinks almost as much as gear oil. And at 1000 ppm Ti... there could be much of this sulfide in there; or the carbamate, or a combination even.

Yes, you're correct; I stand corrected.
From the spec sheet: 0.010 % titanium by weight.
0.01 % = 10^-2 * 10^-2 = 10^-4 = 100 ppm by weight

I doubt that's enough to actually do anything. Sounds a lot like Pennzoil's Pentane marketing.

Whoever came up with that marketing campaign needs to rethink. The last thing I want in my oil is titanium! It is like branding your oil with "Diamond" or "Sand" :-)
