Liqui Moly MolyGen VS Pennzoil Platinum for Nissan Qashqai - American In Ecuador

Good Evening,

I've lingered around these forums for years, but haven't ever posted any questions here. I'm in a pickle.

I moved from the US to Coastal Ecuador near the town of Salinas. I bought a new 2025 Nissan Qashqai 1.3L direct injection with a turbo & six-speed manual transmission.

The 'dealership' in Guayaquil, Ecuador, wanted me to go back to them every 5,000 KM (3,106 miles) to get the oil changed. This is a 300-mile round trip. I did this twice and decided I'd be doing maintenance locally. After doing research and talking to the lads in England via Qashqai Facebook groups (where this vehicle is made and most popular), I've decided to change the interval to every 10,000 KM (6,213 miles). That's still way more often than I've ever changed oil before (usually at the 10,000-mile mark) - and hopefully contributes to engine and turbo longevity.

I don't at all mean to be a jerk, but the people here know very little about proper vehicle maintenance or lubricants. Here, you take your oil and filter to the mechanic to change. I'd do it myself (and have for 25 years), but my community (Urbanizacion) doesn't allow it, and I have no ramps, tools, or anywhere to catch the oil (none of that is common here like in the US).

Here's my issue: I live directly on the coast, like.. 250 yards from the ocean in a warm tropical environment. I have the Pacific Ocean on one side of my house and a saltwater flamingo preserve on the other. I'm constantly surrounded by and saturated with saltwater. Ecuador has a limited number of oil brands readily available. They have a few of their in-country brands everywhere (like Golden Bear) that most of us would never use - but as for trusted brands, there are only a few (and Mobil 1 isn't one of them).

They do have 5w30 Liqui Moly Green MolyGen, which is the holy grail of oil here. I've never heard of this stuff (4 liters for $115.00)
They also have 5W30 Pennzoil Platinum (4 liters for $55.00)

My question is, is this Liqui Moly stuff a gimmick, or is this worth the premium paid for it? I've heard great things about Pennzoil Platinum, but will it hold up in this harsh environment? Again, I live in a saltwater-saturated area, could the premium stuff make a difference inside the motor? Is the premium stuff better for my turbo or direct-injected engine?

I appreciate any insight!

Welcome!
Without a doubt, get the Pennzoil Platinum, it's a great oil.

The LiquiMoly is fine, but not at double the price. The green is fun, but just a gimmick, and it quickly goes black like all other oil in use.

Anecdotal evidence I have not noticed a difference. Liqui moly uses tungsten where pennzoil uses boron, both are stellar anti wear additives. People have reported very long and successful UOA with pennzoil. For double the price there is no reason to not use pennzoil.

Pennzoil.
Which Pennzoil exactly?
What other options do you have except LM and Pennzoil? Castrol? Valovoline? Petronas?
Pennzoil Platinum 5W30.

The only other readily available option is Havoline Pro-DS 5w30

Definitely I would go to Pennzoil first. It has better base stocks etc.
Liqui Moly, you will pay Made in Germany premium. It is absolutely average oil by all means.
Havoline is also IMO better. It is up to 10% PAO.
What is price of Havoline?

I replied to this message before - it appears it was flagged because I said the 's' word..

Havoline Pro-DS 5w30 is readily available here. My issue is it's $27.00 for 4 liters. Half the cost of Pennzoil Platinum. Why? - Your guess would be as good as mine, and I don't think anyone here in Ecuador could tell me either. What I can tell you is that Ecuador isn't known for affordable imports, and anything from the US is usually doubled in cost here. I fear that this 'affordable' Havoline Pro DS oil is actually a rebadged no-name oil from China or Indonesia, it makes no logical sense and scares the crap outta me.

The green is not EXACTLY a gimmick. For the first 2-3 thousand miles it will show up with a black light to help detect any engine oil seepage on your engine. It does serve an actual legitimate purpose, though it is pretty also. It is a premium quality product, as engine oils go, even with no dye, but definitely not worth twice the price of the Pennzoil Platinum, imo.

I would be choosing Pennzoil is this case with no hesitation.

The only other option would be, can you have a jug of oil shipped in from the US? I don't know what shipping would cost, but at those prices, could you buy a jug of Mobil 1 Extended Performance from Walmart for ~$29 and maybe the cost of shipping would still equal around what your local options cost? Mind you a 5 quart jug from the US is 4.7 liters, so that's another pricing advantage.
