Liking my Norelco

I had a Norelco back in the dim and distant past - i.e., 1980 or so, and wasn't impressed. None of the electrics seemed to really do the job in those days. So, for decades, I have been hoping for an electric razor that would give a decently close shave. This past Christmas, my wife gave me a Norelco AT814. This is one that can be used wet or dry. I haven't tried it wet, but it works just fine dry. No razor burn like some of the old ones, and it can shave almost as well as a blade. And, as a bonus, it weighs maybe a third of what that early-80's Norelco did.

I realize that this may not sit well with the ritual ablution and badger hair brush crowd

Haha... I hear ya. I'm a recent electric shaver convert myself. However, I still wet shave as I find it helps soften the beard nicely. While I loved the closeness of shave with a manual razor, it was also causing me to develop frequent ingrown hair. Now with the electric, the closeness is almost as good, but no more ingrown hair problems.

I like the Norelco as well - just recently started using one a few years ago. It's nice to knock the heavy stuff off - if I haven't shaved in 2-3 days. I still use a blade for final clean up. Blades last a lot longer when they are just doing light duty.

2 Christmases ago, well actually 3 since I didn't have one in 2013, my mum got me a Norelco 7810XL
Bad boy can be wet or dry, and has 8 series blades, 3 of them.
The blades haven't been changed since I got it, and I shave with it every day,
It lasted the rigors of Florida, Texas, Fort Polk Louisiana and Afghanistan, and I still use it here.
The only time I didn't use it was the end of 2012 beginning of 2013 when I was in OSUT at Fort Benning. So it's had a 5 month break when I was going through training.

I suppose when I get back to free soil, I'll change the blade. Actually rotated them for the forts time the other day since I've owned it.
Exciting.

LOL, I went to a badger hair brush and double-edge razor since my Braun electric was giving me a horrible 5 o'clock shadow by midafternoon. I also had more issues with missed hairs, and higher amount of ingrown hairs with the electric than with my DE razor. The Braun also irritated my face to no end. I had a similar experience with a Norelco electric, so it wasn't the razor. All those issues were gone once I switched to a DE razor and badger brush/shave soap combination.

As they say, different strokes for different folks who have different shaving needs. Glad you found what works for your face!

I have the Norelco grooming set which you can get for less than $20.

One of the best value for money items I've ever purchased. Very versatile.

I have used two Norelco's for years, last one is a 3D model, great shaver.

BUT, my one son got a shower mirror and said it worked great. So, now I have a shower mirror, and shave with only wet hot water using a Gillette Fusion razor. Gives a smooth shave, blades last forever. Use bar soap AFTER shaving. Believe me it works.

Though I use a DE razor most of the time now, my electric backup is a Norelco -- I've had it for quite a few years. It needs new blades, I think. I changed to it from a Braun, because I cut myself with that one.

Yes. Leave it to me to cut myself with an electric. It had that foil head over the blades. One morning I was shaving with it, and something stung; I thought it had pulled a hair out or something. Then I look at my phiz in the mirror. Blood. The foil had torn and a tiny spear of it was sticking up enough to scratch me.

I bought the Norelco the next day.

I will ONLY use a top line Norelco, since my face would be a bloody MESS if I even tried to use even the BEST blade razor/brush/foam shaving products known to man.
