Life after people

This subject was addressed a number of times in the old Twilight Zone TV series.

Most notable was the one with Burgess Merideth breaking his reading glases.

First thing I would do is look for that honda robot that can play soccer. I think it would be good company. Then I'd get a small sailboat and sail up and down the coast looking for survivors cause I would have no way of knowing that I was the only one left.

Firstly, I wouldn't trust that I'm the last one, and I wouldn't trust that the others are as good natured as me.

So there's this nice place out on the North-east part of town that has no access from the major thoroughfares through the town, requiring an almost doubling back up some fairly innocuous looking roads. Easily defensible, and right on the creek that serves as the town water supply.

Secondly, I've notices that the dried pulses/legumes in the local supermarkets are always really well stocked, and have little turnover.

Need more .22 ammo, and a glass cutter (we've got a really good library).

Yes, not only will dogs keep you company, they'll have you over for dinner.

You'd have to think along more practical lines: Find a sheep farm and split the flock into two groups, the food group and the cuddling group.

I would officially declare myself "curator" of all the Snap-on warehouses in the world.

Maybe, and they are also reputed to love their sheep.

I'm with Pabs on the boatride idea. Be just my luck though, chance to re-populate the earth, and the old cords have been clipped for over 20 years! Oh well, guess I could continue to "pratice" just in case they grew back.

Get to a place with good water (above any flood planes), not too cold, not too hot, ideally with fruit trees, trees for wood as fuel, and critters around.

Locate water filters, water treatment, firearms, ammo, durable clothing, food that stores well (I remember eating 20 year old C rats when in the military), etc.

Locate some propane powered vehicles as propane seems to have a much longer lifespan than gas or diesel.

If you don't know much about horses or mules and plan on staying around awhile then learn, as fuel will be a problem for other types of transportation a few years out.

Music and movies will be missed. For a source of electricity try to find propane powered generators. Hard to say how long hydroelectric grids will run on their own.

Try to find antibiotics and other medicines with a decent shelf life, store them as best as you can.

Try to locate some tactical nukes to blow the dams. It'd be nice to see salmon running in large numbers in the Columbia River again, and other rivers running free.

i have thought about it often even from being a child up to the present day. I haven't seen the show but would love to. What most fascinates me is how plants will take over again( i.e. which ones, how it will look, in 10, 100, 1000 years). Especially where I live. 150 years ago it was pristine sub tropical rainforest with ancient growth, now 99.99% has been wiped out for pastureland (was all cleared before 1900!).

Seeing as how all the world's nuclear reactors would suddenly go unmonitored, I'm not sure how long you'd be around to enjoy it.

We've got some neat coal fired ones here also in my district. They are happy with coal or timber.

Thanks Julian, I'm one step closer to post apocalyptic self sufficiency.

Buy land with natural gas wells on it. Just keep handy at fixing your generators ..and keep the oil stash in high inventory. I've been thinking about doing that for about 20 years anyway.

In the event of problems the reactors should shut down automatically by stopping the fission process, using something like the insertion of graphite rods. Even if a reactor melts down it tends to regional.

Wonder if there's anything you could add to a huge gas or diesel tank so that the fuel would be useable for 20 years? Grab all the Stabil you can find, I guess. Don't know about going to Singapore....that's a lot of ocean and there won't be any GPS help...well, maybe there might be for a couple of years. But with my luck, we'd argue on the first date and then back to my "comfort" zone.
