Porsche, and other low volume makes, shouldn't even be included in these rankings against true mass production manufacturers in my opinion.

you are right! that makes toyota 2nd to lexus! . although subaru being below chevy??!!! doubtful

JD Powers ranks Toyota/Lexus high. Wow who would ever believe it.

One thing that I can say about our past Toyota/Lexus vehicles is, that they've been reliable! Even if not as enjoyable to drive as were some of our other vehicles.

I have been very fortunate with this '04 Nissan Altima, as it doesn't show to be a steller vehicle in terms of reliability. Being my first Nissan, I'm very happy with it and love the way it drives/feels in my hands and the seat of the pants.

Basically a catastrophic motor failure is given the same weight as trivial things like a trim piece that rattles.

Similar logic applies to Buick: higher average age and hence the cars don't get driven as much (so less chance to break).

In complete agreement. This is just data, and the evaluation of it is critical. I tend to ignore most of this advice.

Purely anecdotal, but my Chrysler has been one of my best purchases across 40+ years of car and truck ownership.

I sure don't. BMW has tons of issues and vocal owners who are all over the Net just a-squealin'.

The other chart that I think is useful is the "defects per 1000 vehicles". That's an indicator of QC at the factory.

Our 2011 Caravan was horrible, flat out embarrasing for a new vehicle. I have been doing my best not to rip them anymore, as at one point I was very upset with them, I am slowly getting over it- but you asked...

Since they started making cars?

It is interesting to see Ram come from bottom ast year to near the top this year. Wonder what changed and if it will continue. And as uaual, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep is bringing up the rear.

And it reinforces what I have been saying - Honda is no better than the rest. Toyota somehow is still making decent stuff. But I still think they are way overrated and not as good as they seem.

Looks like they are all pretty close to me. Buy what will make you happy. Life is too short to ride around in something boring!

Exactly. Read my previous post! These charts do NOT tell you how your particular car is going to behave. The folks that buy into this and only purchase the top rated cars are NOT guaranteed a trouble free driving experience.

I can honestly say that I have never used this kind of data to decide what to buy.

Exactly, hence the use of the term "apparently" in my post

Yeah but where the BMW is going to really cost you in reliability over say a domestic is just past the 3 years beyond where the JD Power's survey ends.

Put the word potentially in there, and I would agree. My M5 has cost me less to own than my sister's 2-year newer 330i has cost her. Just being a BMW doesn't mean it is going to be expensive to own. But I think it means that it MAY be expensive to own if issues arise.

My main point is JD Powers a lot like Consumer Reports doesn't give you the real story of the significance of the issues or how it'll be 5+ years out. So most cars have 1.2 or so undefined issues within the first 3 years while under warranty. whoopdy do

That said the dependability survey showed that GM cars were as good or better than average and higher than several other makes that get touted as dependable.

What do you use to decide what car to buy?

Are there more accurate resources to learn what cars are more likely to be more reliable as used vehicles?
