Went to NAPA tonight and picked up some Gold filters for my 2006 Toyota Tacoma. The parts guy gave me 1348 filters. Examining them next to the installed filter, the NAPA filters are shorter. When I got home I got a mirror out to find the actual part number of the OEM filter. It's a 90915-20004.

Researching this on the web, I found the following page with the filter dissected: http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/parts/toyota_filter/

It's looks to be a Lexus filter.

The media in these filters is very different from the standard paper pleated media. Are there other filters with similar construction? The big difference in construction makes me think I should stick with the OEM filters.

Comments please.

The -20004 is the filter installed at the factory. It used to be available at the dealership, but is becoming harder to find. The replacement filter (the YZZD3 I think) has the traditional media and construction, but still a solid, well-made filter. It is a little smaller than the -20004. The Napa Gold filter will work fine also.

I used this filter on one 5k mile interval with my 2002 Taco and did an analysis. In fact, I did three concurrent analysis with M1 filter, Lexus filter, and Wix filter. Analysis results were better with WIX, slightly "worse" with Lexus, and IMO signicantly worse with M1.

Just my 2 cents. My vehicles get WIX filters...51516...slightly oversized.

Kreativ...

Sorry it took so long to reply, we just got power back after a bad ice storm.

The one I used is the same (90915-20004) as you posted.

Santo, it looks like foam in the picture, but it is actually a hard resin coated material with fiber reinforcement like fiberglass, built on a plastic cage. Its actually quite hard to tear through it.

Let's see, with a 5,000-mile OCI, you should have enough filters for 6,740,000 miles...

And I thought I had a big stash...

Sorry, but SOMEONE had to say it...

Bullet, this might be true for his dealership pulling a fast one on their customers (even that I think is a stretch), but not for Toyota corporate. Toyota partners with Denso for making their filters.

The -20004 is a discontinued part number. Look for cross reference to 90915-YZZB5 or 90915-YZZD3.
