I'll ponder this one for a while.
In the meantime, here's a nasty customer. He has two common names, neither of which is technically correct.
He packs a mean one, I speak as one who knows....

bald faced hornet

Few years back, we had a 24' cruiser. One fine afternoon my wife started to open the convertible top and got "hit" twice, once on the eyebrow, again just above. After ice pack and benadryl she decided she'd just as soon be out on the lake as anywhere. ONE TOUGH LADY!!! Nearly 2 days later it swelled her eye shut.

We ran up on a nest of these babies in the Smokey Mountains during an Outward Bound course. They took off after us, without any provocation. One got me on the side of my face and then again on the hand when I slapped him off. It felt like a hot needle had been jab into me and twisted. Hurt pretty good for half an hour and swelled up, but then was as good as new within an hour.
Good thing I' not allergic to anything. Except Ovation "guitars".
