In about 8 months, daughter will get her license and receive my Altima. I will be in need of a vehicle for myself. I'd like to find something 15-19k dollars that will be reliable. Seems nothing is really made that well anymore. I like leather seats and nice looks. I am open to a FWD CUV mid-sized or a sedan. I am leaning towards a used Lexus ES350 at the moment. What other recommendations do you people have? What about a Charger/300? Too much of a gamble?

I am also not opposed to jumping on a good deal now as I am able to add another car to the fleet now without any financial burden.

I like the Chargers/300 but would never buy one. I just think they're not a Lexus ES350 & what it sounds like you're ultimately after. I understand your excitement but I'd focus on one purchase for what you need. Buying can be stressful so no need to buy a car now & then another one again soon unless that is what you absolutely need to do. As for a CUV the first one that comes to mind are the 17+ CX-90 or CX-9's midsize CUV.

What's your annual mileage?
Space wise, big, middle or small?
How nice do you want?
Fuel economy coming up so infrequently in these posts points to the perennial low price of fuel here.

edit: Are there maintenance items to be addressed before she "gets the keys" to the Altima?

It's only 1 purchase

20-25mpg is nice. I drive about 12k miles a year. I need space be it trunk or hatch. Nicer is preferred as my Nissan is SL which is loaded (leather, nav, moonroof, etc) and the Jetta that got totaled before it was SEL premium.

You've got it right. Find the best ES within your budget and you will be good to go. If you can go a little higher and get a CPO, even better. The same goes for the RX. Charger/300's are simply put, not reliable and not really a good choice given that reliability is your first criterion. I would note that there are toyota equivalents of these vehicles. Lastly, I would suggest, if possible, at least considering a new vehicle, such as a Toyota or even a Lexus. Right now, Nissan is offering $5,000 off Pathfinders and some dealers are offering another $2-3K on top of that. While Nissan is a shaky company, that car has the V6 engine that is tried and true and a conventional transmission, plus it is well equipped even at the lower levels. I know this suggestion is not exactly responsive to your question, but always think it is worth at least considering new, when weighing against the unknowns of a new car. Best wished and good luck.

$39k for a Pathfinder new, no. This one is near me:

Does that make sense buying a used base 2WD with seventy thousand Michigan miles on the clock against a new one for $39k? I get that money’s money, but I would do what I could to swing the $15k. The warranty, new tires, certainty the car has not been abused and the new car smell has to have some economic value. My thought is that the price right now is so good, it has to be considered.
