Leaking bottles of oil?

I've noticed this on a couple of bottles in my stash. Looks like it's seeping around the clear level indicator part of the bottle. Is this normal or do I need to use these up soon?

Yes the unfortunate thing is they don't make 5 quart milk Jugs!
conveniently, they do sell oil in 5 quart jugs :3 i like to keep a few empty jugs around, good for emptying the drain pans into! but they're also ideal if you need a jug to put some extra oil in, or for a top-off container to fill from one of the 12qt bibs.

The plastic in milk jugs might not play well with motor oil.
I had one seep at the bottom seam after a couple of weeks sitting.

My 2¢
I had this same thing happen with used motor oil. I’m pretty sure that the trace amount of fuel in the oil degrade the seams. I’ve never tried it with virgin lubricant though. So the results may vary? Was your experience with used oil?

No, leaking bottles is never normal. Had it happen before.Use it or put the oil in something else. Not a complicated matter.

Windshield washer fluid bottles work good for oil. I use them for used oil from my OPE, it takes three or four years to fill one and I've never had on leak.
I usually keep my widemouth oil jugs and reuse them and transfer my use oil out of the good jugs into washer solvent bottles when I go to get rid of it. Washer solvent bottles are pretty strong, also quite chemical resistant since they're designed to hold methanol solutions, I've seen sealed old sealed bottles of winter solvent bulge quite a lot and still not leak so they're pretty strong.

That's not leakage. Its oil that seeped down off the threads of the cap from when you removed it. If you wipe the top of the bottle, then the inside of the cap before reinstalling it, you wont get this happening. I had oil all over my shelves before I started doing this, cursing the stupid oil companies for using cheap, leaky bottles that for some reason only leaked after I had opened them. Then I did an experiment and started wiping the bottle threads and inside the cap... suddenly the problem stopped happening.

As far as milk jugs, I have a few in my workshop I've been too lazy to take to Autozone, I know a couple of them have been there over a year shoved up against the wall in the back corner. Havent had a problem with those leaking, however if they are very full and the cap is on tight, if you accidently kick them or bump them with anything, they will crack open in a big dang hurry.

This is smart, and similar to what I do. I use any old jugs to transfer used oil to the store. It's smart to keep some clean dedicated OIL jugs around to transfer oil into in the event of leakers or other needs...
