What is the difference (advantages/disadvantages) between the two? I believe Wix and Napa Gold both use the coiled spring; I buy Motorcraft and it has the leaf spring. Even some of the popular, high-end filters (Mobil 1, K & N) use the leaf version; Amsoil, I think, does not. Not sure about Royal Purple. Thanks in advance for your input and replies!

I'm assuming you are talking about the spring in the dome end that holds all the guts of the filter tight and together ... and not the spring used in the bypass valve (two different applications of a spring).

As long as the spring holds all the filter's guts together tightly as required, IMO it doesn't matter which design is used. I think the flat leaf spring is used to help save some space (seems to me anyway).

Me too. I'm disappointed

I wanted to share my plans for leaf springs on the front of my Cheroke.

You're not the only one....

However, considering the context... I prefer coil.

Sorry, guys, I didn't clarify myself. I wanted to find out the differences between a leaf spring and a coiled spring inside an oil filter (the spring that rests on the inner dome of the filter).

As said above, if the "spring" regardless of design type holds all the guts of the filter together tightly, then it's doing its job as designed.

Only "downside" of the leaf spring design is IF it happens to be installed backwards at the factory, then it could cause problems by not working as designed.

Not sure there is a need to apologize, it is in the oil filter section....

I'm with Z06, it really doesn't matter. Personally I have always liked the coil better, it seems like a sturdier design to me. I have used leaf spring filters (M1 in the G6 now) with no issue at all. It's job is to hold things in place and provide the tension to seal the element to the base plate. As long as it does that, it's good.

Both leaf and coil spring work equally well.

This topic is akin to the whole "dome or base plate" bypass issue.

Both are WIDELY used and are proven to work just fine.

You can worry about both if you wish, but it isn't going to improve or degrade the protection of your car one iota. If you believe otherwise, then I ask you post proof (not rhetoric and idle chatter, but SAE study or UOA data) that would support your claim.

But when it appears in the far left column, under the "Recent Topics" section, it is not shown in a category until it is clicked on and opened...
