Latest auction win: Volvo S60 T-5 Manual

Love the 5 speed manual on our new S60. 2.4 NA; a joy to drive.

Great cars, even my circle of friends has a love affair with P2 S60s and I can count at least 5 of them that have passed through their hands with only regret at not having them any longer. They sound great and do everything I need well.

Mine has been with me over 16 years, my first "serious" car that I look a loan for when my career was getting going. Purchased at 30k miles, it now registers almost 220k and runs just as well as the day I bought it with regular upkeep and been through a lot with it.

Others have made good suggestions on what to look out for, I would simply add to consider changing the gearbox fluid as it is likely original and could benefit from something new. Mine has been using Red Line MTL since I purchased it, but there are other options like the Volvo Genuine MTL as well. Capacity on the M56 5-speed is just over 2 quarts, so purchase 3 quarts if you decide to take this on.

Agree that the transmission fluid should be changed. I changed the MT fluid in our new S60 to HPL Manual Transmission Life 75W. It has made a noticeable difference.

I'll definitely be going through and changing fluids/filters/tune-up items as necessary, as I do with all my vehicle purchases. I'm hoping to see the car this weekend, I haven't received any notification of pickup but it's the holidays so I'm sure things are busy. The anticipation is only slightly killing me.

We bought an 01 T5 brand new. Outside of timing belts and standard maintenance, never had to turn a bolt on the car. Both of my older kids ended up leaning to drive in it and when I sold it, it had 364k on the odometer. That car took an absolute beating and never once left any of us stranded. Original starter and alternator was still working when I got $1k out of it, and its probably still going down the road.

It appears your 'recirc' button has a single indicator LED on its left side.
Ergo, your HVAC takes the thinner (1") of the 2 CAFs offered.

The thicker (1.5") example, often with charcoal, is for cars with AQIS (Air Quality blah blah blah...).
Someone always warns, "Never install both CAF filters in one car".

There'll be a right indicator light labeled "AUT" on cars with the premium system.
When on, the recirculation door closes in response to a sensor in the cowl.
Once I turned it on and deliberately drove behind a stinking truck and the system performed perfectly.

FYI: The air quality sensor happens to be a part shared among several European auto makers.

INSTALLATION TIP: When removing the 4 torx screws from the bottom of the CAF box
a) Use a 1/4" bit holder tool without a handle and run these screws by hand only.
I wrapped rubber bands on the 1/4" shank for grip.

b) Remove all 4 screws. The little rectangle of plastic has to be gone to clear the filter.
