My first gun was a mossberg 500 crown grade. Was $158 from walmart before they stopped selling guns in ca.

I loved it until i won a remington 1100 in a raffle. Everything is better with the 1100 so now my 500 is my home defense gun

No guns huh? How's that working out? Feel safer?

Can still have "some" guns, just not "evil" assault thingies like the OP just got...LOL.

As to feeling safer, there's a strong rumour that the registry got hacked, and now the thieves have a shopping list to work through.

A pump 12 is considered an "assault" gun????? WTH!!!

Yep, all pump and semi shotguns, ALL semi rifles were deemed assault weapons.

Can have a bolt/lever shotties...but I would love a pistol grip Remington pump .223 iwht pistol grip because it looks so much more "assault" than the 10-22s that were banned.

No leaving them above the bed either, they are either in a safe, or have to be neutered to be on display.

Well it's a prison island after all, right? Too much criminal nature in the genome?

J/k

Are those any good? I bought a Mossberg 835 shortly after they came out and it was pure junk. The slide would jam after every couple shots. It jammed so bad that I had to put the butt end into my stomach and use both hands to pull the slide back.

No idea, but all the reviews I've read have been good and it came highly recommended over the 870 by the local gun shop apparently

Bought my boys a Mossberg 930 all purpose semi-auto for turkey hunting.
It has been a great gun.

The 500 series shotguns are incredibly durable and reliable. They're used my law enforcement and military the world over. They're also very adaptable, able to interchange different barrel lengths, magazine tube lengths, grip and forend configurations, etc.

Obviously, any shotgun (Mossberg or otherwise) is not designed to malfunction every few rounds. If you had one that did that, then something was wrong with that particular example.

The Mossberg 500 has been around for a long time now- over 40 years I think. I have an early house brand version(New Haven) that has the single action bar(one bar going from the pump forend back to inside the receiver) instead of the dual action bars in use for decades now. They may not be your cup of tea, or you might get a bad one, but in general, they are good quality, lifetime firearms.

The New Haven? I took it in partial trade on a car we sold in 1977.

I got a deal on a Mossberg 500 with the pistol grip a few years ago. While the pistol grip looks cool, I never warmed up to it while shooting. Now it has a Mesa Tactical stock with the recoil buffer and a Limbsaver pad. Now it's a blast to shoot at the range.

No, you are thinking of Savage Arms

I do have a Savage .270, but it was manufactured in the USA like my Mossberg is.

Took it out shooting this aft. Unfortunately adverse weather (it was raining) and limited daylight meant that I only was out for about an hour, however it performed perfectly. The action cycles beautifully, quite smooth with little effort, the trigger weight is excellent and the ports on the barrel seem to help with barrel jump on a shot allowing you to get the next round off that much quicker.

Shot used was just the inexpensive Winchester Universal 2 3/4 loads:

I'm going to get a load of slugs next I think and try out the rifled bore barrel

The Lakefield, Ontario plant made Mossberg and Cooey arms for decades before Savage bought them recently.

Was unaware of that! I believe all they make for Savage are .22LR rifles, which they previously made as Lakefield rifles.

Savage bought Lakefield Arms in 1995.

Your quote above made me do a little searching and I found the following quote:

Quote:
Savage Arms has been a part of the Lakefield community since 1968. Originally known as Lakefield Arms, production started with two models of .22 caliber rifles.

From 1970 to 1991, the company built Mossberg Model 500 pump action shotguns.

In 1989, Enterprise Canada Ltd. purchased Lakefield Arms, and from that point forward the company added more than 25 models to its .22 caliber line.

In 1994, Lakefield Arms was sold to Challenger Industries, a holding company that also owned Savage Arms and Passive Bullet Trap, located in Westfield, Mass, U.S.

Ron Coburn, the present owner, purchased Savage Arms Inc. which included this business as well as the businesses in Westfield in 1995.

The company changed its name to Savage Arms (Canada) Inc., and a corporate name change was made to Savage Sports Corporation.

The company has continued to enjoy steady growth, adding a large warehouse in 1998. Today, it exports nearly 97 per cent of its product to the United States.

The product line consists of bolt action and lever action single shot, bolt action repeater, semi-automatic, ‘Striker’ handguns and other firearms. In 2002 it added the .17 caliber product; by 2003 that model represented 45 per cent of the company’s shipments.

In 2006 the company introduced the AccuTrigger, a trigger design so revolutionary it will forever change the way shooters expect triggers to function. It’s another example of Savage’s fresh innovation in setting new standards.

Nice! While I prefer black over camo finish, I'm not a hunter. The 500 is there w the 870 for most versatile, functional, reliable shotguns out there. I have a thing for my Benelli M3s90 Entry and M1014, but neither is as reliable as a good Mossy/Remington.
While it's been a while, I seem to recall my former 500 (pistol grip w AR style adjustable folding stock, bead sights, sight rail w EOTech, and SureFire front end weapon light) excelled w heavy slugs even w the 18.5" barrel, and I recall splitting a fence post in half from 70 yards or so w a 350gr rifled sabot slug.

The short barrel is quite accurate, you just have to be comfortable shooting heavier, sabot, rifled slugs. The drop is negligible out to 100yds, enough that you could put down a man sized target.

Congrats again, and have fun and be safe!

Nice gun! You can do it all with that one.
Interesting that the smooth barrel is ported, I've only seen ported rifled slug barrels.
You will be impressed with a good 3" sabot, they have quite the kick and sound! Bring some washer fluid jugs filled with water and see what 2000+ ftlb of energy can do! Or some blocks of ice.
I had my slug gun ready this weekend as we had an especially brave coyote visit us on Friday during the day, but it didn't show up again. Maybe next weekend.

You may have a rough chamber.

Get an old 20ga or .45cal bore brush, wrap it with a generous amount of 0000 steel wool, coat steel wool with Flitz, chuck the whole thing in a drill, then polish the chamber.

I had an 870 that would get sticky with Rio target loads and would jam badly with Winchester Universal bulk packs. Polishing the chamber fixed it.

Federal bulk packs, Remington Gun Club, Rio buckshot, and Winchester AA always worked fine.
