The conversation about tire inflators got me to thinking about what is now called the “12v power outlet” but was always known to us older folks as the “cigarette lighter socket.” That got me to thinking about how long it’s been since a vehicle has left the factory with an actual lighter element installed in the socket, and that made me wonder if anyone is still producing vehicles with an actual ashtray. The last vehicle I can definitively remember owning with one was my 87 Toyota.

When did the ashtray go away?

I do not know the year, but probably the same year the Smokey the Bear Commercials came on tv.

I am thinking maybe late 60's early 70's, that is for American Cars, cannot speak for the foreign vehicles.

I am talking ashtrays!

I know the last rear-wheel drive GM B-bodies in 1996 (Roadmaster, Caprice, Fleetwood) had a full-sized ash tray and lighter up front, and ash trays in all four doors with individual lighters in the rear doors (may have been Fleetwood only).

My wife's 93 Corsica had an ashtray that fit in the cupholder. It was, obviously, easily removable.

I bet a MGM, Town Car, or 1/2 ton truck had them remarkably currently.

That was the little $12 smoker's package GM was offering in most models. It came with the round ashtray that fit in the cupholder and a cigar lighter that went into the....now called 12v outlet.

This is opposite of the question but reminds me of my '80 Audi 5k that had a cigarette lighter and ashtray in each rear door panel ;) Heaven forbid the rear passengers share a lighter or ash tray.....

The Cali Camaro 3.8 Limited Edition had one. My current car on the other hand…

Nope. that came a few years later... (Mom had a 93 Corsica when i was learning to drive, and prior to her buying that one, we had had several as vacation rentals, or Service loaners over the couple years beforehand)
can't find a decent photo online, but here's a Parts Diagram..
corsica console.jpg

the square opening right above the orange dot i put in is where the cupholder/ashtray lived.
Part #9 is the "ash tray holder"/Cup holder
part #7 is the Ash Tray.
#9 bolts in from below, and it has a sliding cover with a raised handle, that sides back into the void
just below that cover is a little sliding tray, with a hole punched out the size and Shape of #7
If you didn't need to use the ash tray, it also had a little raised handle, and could be slid back into the void, and Voila! you now have a (square) cupholder for the Drivers Seat.
but you could have a Cupholder OR an Ashtray at any given time. not both.

there was a second set of 2 cupholders that popped out of the dash in front of the passenger.

as to the original question at hand, I know my 2000 Sonata had an ashtray ( did a lot of smoking in that car) , but my next car, (2005 Neon) did not.

My 03 Dodge ram 1500 has a real ashtray and cigar lighter but my 2012 ford fiesta does not. But the Fiesta is so small I am not sure there is any space for an ashtray.
