Larger sumps on modern engines?

Maybe it is a balancing act with regards to resources and the environment.

Take this into consideration. Extended drain intervals.

As a made up example (since I know nothing of being an engineer):

You have an engine you are designing and it can take 6 quarts to a 6,000 mile interval

or
it takes 4 quarts to a 4,000 mile interval


It seems more oil will take you to a safe extended OCI, but where do you come into diminishing returns. e.g. Will a 12 quart sump net a 12,000 mile OCI???

Not a problem in spring, summer and fall, but winters in the northern states could see moisture problems showing up.

It retains that temperature longer once you turn off car.
My BMW has 8qt sump and it is diesel. It takes some time to reach temp, but once it reaches around 80c, you can park while it is 10 degrees outside, come back 4hrs later, and temp. is still around 30-40c.


Mine holds 5 quarts and does the same.
