Maybe it is a balancing act with regards to resources and the environment.
Take this into consideration. Extended drain intervals.
As a made up example (since I know nothing of being an engineer):
You have an engine you are designing and it can take 6 quarts to a 6,000 mile interval
or
it takes 4 quarts to a 4,000 mile interval
It seems more oil will take you to a safe extended OCI, but where do you come into diminishing returns. e.g. Will a 12 quart sump net a 12,000 mile OCI???
