larger filter for 7.3 IDI?

Hello all,
This is my first post. Been lurking for a while though. I have read elsewhere that the powerstroke filter is a good choice as a larger filter for my 92 F250 IDI. I have read the specs on that filter (wix 51734) and compared them to the 'stock' filter (wix 51742) and they are the same except for the Beta ratio, (slight) burst pressure, and nominal filter rating.

Anyone want to recommend another choice. Left to my own I'd stick to Motorcraft, Wix, Napa Gold or Fleet Service as these are all readily available to me. If there are any other good choice then please say so - I can likely find a local source.

There are a ton of filters in that thread. It appears that just about all of them use a slightly bigger gasket, though. You're basically at 4" and 3.6" ..while just about everything else is 4.3 and 3.85". There's about 100 hydraulic and diesel oil filter alternatives in Donaldson.

I don't know a thing about your PS diesel, but if you've got a liberally sized filter gasket area ..you could have a lot more options.

Won't a Powerstroke filter (FL 1995 for Motorcraft) fit that engine too? I thought it fit the old 6.9's.

The FL1995 is xref to a 51734


I also miss quoted the thread size.

It's 1 1/2-16 not 1 1/2-12. As you go deeper into the search criteria ..the likeness to your query erodes.

Everything in a 1 1/2-16 thread appears to have a larger gasket.

Big O Dave would have every filter available from Wix in that gasket/thread size.

Thanks for the replies. It seems the PS filter is a good choice. Anyone want to suggest whether or not the 'stratapore' versions of that filter are worth the money when using Delo 15-40 on 5k OCIs? Could I get a longer OCI with such a filter. Essentially I am working toward longer OCIs but am hoping to learn a thing or two along the way.

I'd do a cost comparison and see what your difference is annually. If you're paying (or are willing to pay) $5 more for a Stratapore, and are committed to 5k OCIs, you could be better served with a tp bypass filter. You could then just leave the full flow alone (or not).

As far as "worth it"? That depends on who you want to sell the PS to when you're done with it. If it's a relative (one that you actually like

) ..yes. If you're just going to sell it ..probably not.
