Have you decided ? I need to start looking for something for the wife since she reminded last week that her machine is starting to make weird noises. lol

You better back that thing up ASAP if you have important items on it. ASAP!

Chances are it's the mechanical drive that's making the strange noises. I would buy a SSD then clone your current drive (an HDD won't work without an additional power source). If it's a store bought pre-installed OS and your drive fails sayonara to your licence without a recovery disk. Even still you'd have to reinstall all your programs. I currently use the free version of EasyUS, and before, Macrium Reflect with success.

Download Crystal Disk Info and check out the hard drive.

Instead of recommending an expensive purchase, why not ask what the noise is? We don't even know what thenoise is . Is it a beep or click, indicating a hdd issue or is it something that points more to a fan or something else?

True, but it's a good practice anyway. SSD's are fairly cheap and can always be used somewhere else if need be. Don't forget, if it's a worse case scenario as I described above then he would be on the hook for a new OS as well as the HD (unless he runs Linux of course).

I'm not a fan of the Unity desktop. Just a personal preference.

Apple computers are actually pretty good in terms of build quality. Problem is i cant get anything done on it aside from web browsing, just like their phones.
I-d never consider a Mac over a quality Windows.
Only brand i-d avoid is Acer low end / budget laptops, they have terrible keyboard that break even with light use. Not sure about their high end offerings.
Aside from that, every other major brand will be good i think.
Never had any problems with Asus, Lenovo, Sony (Which doesnt exist anymore). Currently using a Lenovo Thinkpad and a Vizio laptop.

Have and used Macbooks, Lenovos, Dell, HPs, and Acers and now have a convertible
touchscreen Acer.

Nice things: you don't need a mouse - just tap the screen, pinch and zoom to see a
larger picture. when in convertible mode, you can use this as a book reader with
a larger than the tiny 7" androids.

much more friendly experience. count how many mouse clicks next time you boot your laptop/desktop.
