What do you think about this laptop for $1499? (Lenovo LEGION 5i 16" Gaming Laptop - 14th Gen Intel Core i9-14900HX - GeForce RTX 4070 - 165Hz )

On sale, "save $200". Is this a good value for the money?

I'm not a gamer but woudl liek a robust laptop for future proofing. I also like the 4070 graphics card for smooth editing with Premier Pro. What do you think?

Nice computer, if it meets your requirements I'd go for it. Lenovo makes good stuff most of the time.
I am not familiar with their reputation except that they are a Chinese company that bought IBM's laptop line. Thank you.

Good laptop and priced right.

However any reason why you'd want a desktop-replacement laptop instead of getting desktop?

They sell a lot of computers. Most of them are great. A few of the cheapest models are trash (as with any laptop brand) but I'd say once you are over $600, Lenovo makes a good product. Bonus since you're buying it from Costco you get an included 2 year warranty.

My go-to for laptops for friends or family or myself is often Best Buy because sometimes you can find great clearance or sales and they have more selection, but I'm moving more and more of my laptop purchasing/recommending to Costco because over the years Best Buy has had less and less in stock. It used to be, you'd go in there, pretty much every laptop on display could be purchased in the store... now over half of them have to be ordered, which sucks and defeats the purpose. I do like going in and testing the keyboard, touchpad, seeing how the display is, before buying it... but at Costco, if you don't like it, just return it, they're OK with that.

I would prefer a desktop but I need to be mobile.

I'm still going to use it like a desktop and try to squeeze out a 6 monitor setup using a USB C adapter:

  • QUAD MONITOR DISPLAY ADAPTER: USB 3.0 to 4x HDMI video adapter lets you extend your desktop by adding up to four HDMI monitors to your laptop or desktop computer; 4x 1080p 60Hz displays; 2ch audio (one source replicated to all displays through HDMI)

I've had a Legion Y530 for a few years, and can't complain about it. Due to its age, specs/pricing are apples and oranges compared with current models, so I can't be of much help there.

There are a few cons that come with packing performance into a laptop - the first is heat, meaning the fans tend to spool up quite a bit, even when I'm not asking a lot of the laptop. Also, this is not a great laptop in the literal sense - when my wife was using it for remote education, I had to (politely) educate her about why resting it on her blanket-covered lap was a bad idea. If any of this fan noise or heat production is a concern in your case, that's something to think about.

The other thing that catches my eye is the power supply situation. At this point, many laptops on the market can use a USB-C PD charger, rather than a dedicated power brick. Packing up a relatively small USB-C PD wall wart and USB-C cable is much less cumbersome. Since this laptop specs a 140W supply, you're stuck with a dedicated brick and cords. Again, whether that matters is use-case dependent.

Further to my last post - it looks like the current Legions may be able to pull up to 100W through USB-C PD. My model simply doesn't allow charging through USB-C.

So, if the laptop doesn't need to run full tilt, you might get by with USB-C PD on the go. If it's set up like mine, it will throttle performance down as the battery depletes if the power supply can't support full performance.
