Have a 15 year old HP tower computer system from Costco windows 10, hard drive starting to have problems. Don't do any real computing with it. What do you think about this one.

I could sell you a new Lenovo for $400 shipped that's new never used
And comes with new keyboard and mouse. I bought it and went custom. I buy too many computers.
I could list everything...it was well over $700 new. SOLD!!!

Without knowing what your current tower is to be sure, I will generically say that it would be more cost effective (and fun/educational) to just upgrade the one you have.

-CPU update (can buy used)
-new/add RAM
-new SSD (not an HHD)
-OS update

You could possibly get away with something that simple and spend under $200 to hold you over for at lest 5 more years, maybe more depending on your use. I refurb a lot of PC's for various applications from basic to engineering use. I just dug out an old DELL tower from 2006, installed a used I7, 16G of RAM (added 8G to the original 8G), a new SSD and used a WIN11 ISO to get an OS on it.

The I7 was $35 used on ebay, the RAM was free (would have been under $50), the SSD was $40. That PC now runs one of our CNC machines as all it needs to do is run a G-code sender and maybe light internet browsing/research.

As long as the machine can run the latest OS for internet security reasons, it sounds like you may not need much more.

Updating a 15 year old computer is not feasible. IMO.

OP should:

Get something that is at least 12 gen intel core (linked refurb is gen 9) or equiv amd.

or perhaps a mini pc? $200-$400 gets you something.

minisforum x500 ryzen 5 5600g+ 16GB Ram + 512GB ssd + windows = $219
for example

Check Dellrefurbished.com
They should have some refurbished fairly new generation of Intel CPU for reasonable price after coupons.
The coupons are on the site itself under "Coupon" and also check "Hot Deals".
The coupons usually give around 40% to 50% off.

That thing is not worth $3XX, I'll probably pay up to $150 only, actually maybe $100-120. 8GB RAM seriously? I would take at least 16GB in 2025. If they don't have what you want make sure you budget for some eBay purchase.

Off lease business class desktop from Dell or Lenovo. Make sure it is preloaded with windows 11 and that it meets the specs to run win 11.

Paco
My last employer replaced all of its Dell computers (about 1200, all of which were leased) on a rotating basis every 3 years, all still running perfectly.

Good used computers must be sold somewhere.

I just picked up a refurbished Dell for $369 CDN ($258 US) I don’t know much about computers so I’m not sure if I got a really decent one or not but I don’t play video games or do any kind of video editing (and my Photoshop days are behind me after 31 years of doing it as a career!) Here is the bill with the specs if anyone wants to scold me for not knowing what I bought 🤣

Not a bad price. There is a place in Burlington that sells off-lease computers. Bought lots of stuff from them over the years.

https://www.bauersystems.com/

There is a link to their price list which is a Google spreadsheet that's updated all day long. If you see something you like, contact them immediately or it will be gone.

So far I'm very happy with the speed of this new computer. My old one was probably 6 or 7 years old and super laggy. Even just the most basic of things would often take a minute to react, and it always seemed to be disconnecting and reconnecting from the internet, even though it was always connected via ethernet cable.
