The Kohler filters I've used in the past weren't anything special. Nitrile valve and looked very much like your run of the mill jobber filter... Same with other OPE branded filters from Briggs, etc.
If there's room I'll use something like a longer fram FE3600 and just leave it on there forever. Plus I think they're like $12 at Walmart.Hello,
I just purchased a 'new to me' lawn core aerator. The aerator is equipped with a Kohler Command Pro 173cc vertical shaft engine. It seems pretty good for this application. I was pleasantly surprised to see it equipped with a spin on oil filter. The Kohler Pro Extended Life oil filter has a part number: 14 050 36.
I just looked up these filters and they are about $20 each, and really can be found on select online stores only. Now knowing Kohler most likely doesn't make these, and just rebrands them, I'm wondering if I can get an alternative from Napa or Carquest which is a little cheaper, and easier to obtain? This filter is a small, stubby one. I'm wondering what would be the best course to look up a cross reference for one? I Googled it a little, but was finding alternatives for other Kohler engines.
Any help is appreciated! Thanks! View attachment 209320
That's an interesting steering design...So, Cubs with the twin cylinder Kohler cannot fit a 3614 style filter. Yes, it will "fit" but you will eventually get rub and a dent on the filter.

I did try and get a slightly shorter filter from Napa (forget part number, it's for a '95 Tacoma 2.7L) when I did my last Fall service.

It too now has a dent.
The only filter I've had work that didn't break the bank is a Baldwin B7165, around $8 off Rock Auto.

Those filters seem to work fine on the Cubs, as well as Fram PH8172 (amazon). That's an interesting steering design...
My grandfather's Scag mower with a Kohler V-Twin needs the shorter filter also because there is a frame support right behind the filter. I've found the AC Delco PF2210, that Baldwin, and the Kawasaki 49065-0721 to fit perfect and be decent quality for the price. I just bought a case of the Kawasaki filters since I use so many filters and got them for a good deal on ebay.

I'm seriously thinking about covering the FE3600 on my mower with hammer dents and running it like that till it rusts or starts leaking. Not just a few dents, a hilarious number of dents, completely ridiculous and over the top.Yea, I did it so yous guys don't have to!![]()
My Cub Cadet XT1 hasn't had any issued so far with the Champ XL or Royal Purple version. Control arms are in line with the filter but they are at least an inch away even at max tilt.Another cross reference to use for these OPE filters is a filter that will fit a Yugo. Maybe I'm showing my age with that reference, but it is an application that is easy to remember.
For those curious: Yugo Wiki page
My John Deere lawn tractor doesn't really have a length restriction due to the steering arms being below the frame, so the 51348 size fits fine.
