New Carquest EP Oil Filters

It’s strange. My theory is they just chose the 99.9% efficiency.
But O'Reilly chose the worse end of the range for some reason - they didn't use "99.9%" at 25u, but instead 99% at 25u.. Why not use 99% @ 20u if they could as PGI said "99.5% @20u". That's what doesn't make sense. All I could surmise is O'Reilly's wanted to "play it safe" with the claims.

Recently purchased the MOBIL 1 M1-114A and looks to be PREMIUM GUARD made . Plastic cover , built in bypass , orangish anti-drain valve and same light tan / yellow glue for end caps . The sealing ring is black ( nitrile ? ) and is fairly thick . Also was under $12 .

CB'sG just placed a new opened MOBIL 1 at Y.T.. Very likely P.G. made .

The new Mobil 1 is not PGI made. It's made under Highline Warren (been discussed a lot over the last 6 months), which is basically Prime Guard (different company than Premium Guard Inc, PGI). All the Asian made filters look pretty similar, but not all are made under PGI.

This looks to me like a direct competitor to the Mobil 1 Extended Performance and the Purolator 20K oil filters. I’m sure there are people who will buy one of these filters and use it along with their favorite oil that is advertised to be a 20K mile oil. I’m definitely not their target audience.

I usually do 5-7K mile oil and filter changes. Most of the PG made filters are 99% at 20-25 microns, are good for 10K miles and can be found for around $10 before discount. I’m happy with that and see no reason to buy a 20K oil filter with unknown micron rating.
it's made by Mann Hummel same a Purolator. looks identical to Purolator Boss inside

With a similar micron rating as the Carquest Premium - do you run the same EP 20K mile filter for two or three 5K mile OCI’s ? That’s the only way this EP oil filter makes sense to use . If you don’t use this EP filter for at least two OCI’s it doesn’t make sense to use it - you would be better off just staying with the Carquest Premium .
IMO, the synthetic media itself would offer many benefits. They typically flow better under the same rating, and trap dirt better (they hold dirt inside the media, instead of just surface loading and falling to the bottom, which could bypass the filtration in a bypass event. Motor oil geek has a video on this not long ago). More importantly synthetic media are pretty strong, very hard to tear. I had an old mobil 1 (made by mann hummel) torn at less than 3000 miles. In that filter, even the remaining "good" pleats get fragile after the service, and easily start to tear when I pry with my fingers to inspect. However, I'm not saying Carquest Premium is bad or anything. It's also a very well-constructed filter, and I'd definitely use it as well (especially when CQ Premium seems to have a tad better filtration efficiency than CQ EP).
