KIA Rio + Mitsubishi Mirage get the boot ...

Back in the eighties and nineties, small sedans were all the rage. Economical to buy and run, often sticks and usually fun to drive.
Today, the market has shifted and everyone wants either a half ton pickup with four doors and enormous length and weight or some sort of SUV/CUV.
These are typically not all that entertaining to drive and these days are never sticks. Thirst varies from maybe 18 mpg in daily use with a pickup to mid thirties with the smaller CUVs.
Imagine the fuel economy of something the weight of a nineties Civic or Corolla with current fuel saving tech.
Imagine the shear joy of winding out a smooth and strong four cylinder while snicking through the gears.
We've lost all of that, but that's what the current market wants and the makers follow the purchasing preferences of the masses.
That there's a whole lot more gross as well as percentage margin in a pickup than in a sedan does much to encourage the continued development of these vehicles and discourage that of sedans.

Won’t miss the Rio. However I hope it’s just the Mirage hatchback being discontinued those are ugly. I want a Mirage G4 though that’s like my modern dream car. I seen someone plow into someone the other day with a G4 and I was impressed at how well it held up.

We have a few Mirages as company vehicles for folks who drive to project sites without equipment. So far they've been decent, stupid good on gas and maintenance plan covers everything until 100k.

Can't spend $18,500+ for a MIRAGE or KIA Rio . Might as well step up to a new COROLLA and CIVIC sedan / hatch for $23,000+ which will keep their book value better than a MIRAGE . The Mirage G4 skips rear folding ( split ) back seats and less lining in the trunk . That should be basic like most other small sedans such as the RIO sedan , etc..
I don't think people who buy these types of cars are worrying about resale value-generally.

Not surprising. No one in the USA wants small cars, and TBH small cars haven't done much better on mpg their slightly larger cousins.
My 2019 Ford Fiesta (1.6L, 5M) actually got 2 mpg less than my 2016 Mazda 6 (2.5L, 6m). Never did figure that one out.

I wish Toyota still sold the Yaris, or Mazda the 2, but apparently there are few others who share that opinion.

Aerodynamics is a factor, but I also think the oems like to punish people who don’t buy more upscale. Tin foil hattery I know but for the want of pennies they will do stupid things. But maybe that is the way it is, maybe labor and other overhead costs are fixed, and the only way to make a cheap car is to really dig deep and cut things.

Rio was not awful however mirage never a decent offering that has aged. I am curious what under the hood looks like on an older mirage, to cut costs they did not paint the engine bay 😂

Maybe the mirage you got, but the ones we got were painted inside and out, even inside the boot.

This is definitely in the top of the most reliable vehicles we've ever had in our shop.

There’s still the Mazda 3 hatchback, though it’s probably on the chopping block soon.

Too much 💰. Starts at $25,690 🫣 . At that price probably will get the 🥾 . Might as well go with a hatchback COROLLA , CIVIC or PRIUS for a little less or more .Then there's always a C.U.V..

the only people who buy the mirage are loosers with bad credit
Or people who don't want to pour a ton of investment in a disposable product that will lose its value, or people who live In metropolitan areas with very tight parking, or people who are being responsible by buying what they can afford and spending the money that they are saving towards their retirement or people that are less vain than I am.

The ones I have seen under the hoods of were painted gray. Strut towers, cowl and fender supports, etc. Just because it isn't body color doesn't mean it's unpainted.

Yeah, we are losing them up here too, and there are quite a few around for people who just wanted cheap transportation. A few Spark's too. Now the cheap options are all gone, although maybe one manufacturer will keep one around as it might actually sell well if its the last option?
It seems the compact sedans and hatchbacks still do have a few options left and IMO are better cars for the money.

many decent sized sedans are fairly priced UNLESS you load them with unnecessary "trinkets". girlfriends roomy 18 0ptima gets 35 plus on highway + mid 20 locally depending on where she drives + its peppy + used NO oil
I'm surprised that's all that the better that Optima does on gas mileage. My '99 Dodge Intrepid got those same numbers in a big sedan and 3.2 Liter V6.

Hyundai/Kia engines are not very fuel efficient. The other part is Chrysler V6s are fairly efficient for what they are compared to their four-cylinder offerings as well.
