Kia key replacement cost at dealership vs local locksmith

My 2020 Wrangler only had one key. I got the new one through a locksmith, plus the programming, and 2 keys just for unlocking the doors for $250. I wouldn’t go to the dealership.

He had never seen a vehicle with push button start but manual door locks and hand crank windows.

It’s a Jeep thing.
Guess it’s model dependent - mine is electric …

Well at least it has two keys or did have. When you buy a new Toyota nowadays they come with one key and you have to come back for the second one. Their excuse still to this day is the chip shortage. But I always would go to the locksmith over the dealership. We got a quote from my work for an extra key for my dads Buick and it was like $300 some dollars and an hour of labor to program so it would be like $430 with my discount. But those switch blade keys are always a little bit more expensive but over $1k is just insane.
When we went to take delivery of the wife's 2018 Honda Accord Exl , they tried the "we only have one key for you." I said, "that is ok , You all can just give that one key to whoever you sell it to because I am not leaving this dealership with that car without two keys." The sales guy looked like a deer in headlights and it took him a second or two to realize I was not joking. We ended up with two keys. I do not think those cars that year had the newer type chips in them.

The Kia is driven by the kids and they lost a key a few months ago. At that time, I put AirTags on all the keys. Last weekend, the 17 year old couldn't find the remaining key and I tracked it to 1/2 mile down the road. He came home and put the key on another car to play basketball with his brother and then the 20 year old drove off with that car. Found the key which was smashed but the actual key part still worked so we still have a functioning car. This is a 2022 Kia Soul LX and NOT a push start - the key flips out of the fob. I called Kia and explained the situation and I was quoted $1010 PER KEY. That's 14% of the cost of the Kia NEW.

Needless to say, that is ridiculous, and I actually laughed at the guy. This guy just left message this AM stating he forgot to quote the 1 hour of time needed to program the key so it's actually $1210 per key. A locksmith in town can do it for $200 per key fully programmed.
Check Ace hardware. I was surprised to learn that they can replace keys for just about anything.

I have bought a couple of used cars at the used car lot at the dealer and the last one was the 8 year old Mazda 3. It was a "this is our price take it or leave it" we see now a days. I wanted the car, it was in great shape. I said lets write it up. Before signing, I said where is the second key? They said it only has one key. They said if they come in with one key, we sell it with one key, we bickered back and forth for 5 mins and they refused to do it. I said go get your sales manager, I want to talk to him. He would not do it. I said really your a Mazda dealer, you buy the FOB for less then $100 and it takes 15 mins to do. Cost of doing business. I said, if I don't get second programed OEM key FOB, I am walking out the door. You are actually going to lose this sale over $150. He finally gave in. After 30 mins of drama and BS.

I have 2 locksmiths I like and have done quality work for my neighbors and me. It's worth it to me to pay a little more to have keys made right the first time and shop with a small business. Nothing wrong with ACE but they don't have as many different kinds of blanks as the locksmiths have. My locksmiths have given me good advice that's saved me time and headaches.

Maybe. I thought it was normal across the US. The tech who just moved to my dealership from Pennsylvania said it was the same way at his up there so I thought it was still the universal thing.
My parents Camry which was a 7/24 production vehicle came with two keys. I’ve programmed a “virginized” fob for a 2017 Prius and an extra key for a Fit using a ThinkDiag 2 with no issues. It’s the newer Fords and anything that needs authenticated scan tools(Mopar SGW and new Nissans) that will pose the most hassle.
