MY neon is a 4 cylinder 4.5 quart of oil engine. Automatic. I read that kerosine will help get rid of oil that turns black alot, i am guessing by doing a dman good flush of the engine. How much should i use, for a 15/20 minute flush? Can i go longer with the flushes? Is thier a brnad of kerosine that is recommended?

Why not be safe and use Auto RX or at the least, an engine flush, kerosene is a good solvent but the effects of it on critical engine components remains to be seen.

Hey , If you wanna do a good flush , try this.
drain current oil/replace filter........
put on a new oil filter, install 3 quarts of 20w-50 oil.
and 1 quart of kerosene., Let you engine idle for 15mins, Dont drive it .
Drain the oil for at least 20mins, let it drip,.........leave the filter on.
Fill engine with the cheapest 10w-30 you can find, put in 4.5 quarts., take the car for an easy 20-30min drive.
Drain oil, and replace filter
Use your regular oil/filter combo.

You should notice that your oil will stay cleaner looking at your next OCI.

I have done this process on 15+ sludgy engines, with no problems.

Hey if you are a little aprehensive you can also use mineral spirits, it wont be as harsh as kerosene.:)

My family has used kerosene on old motors that turned oil black in minutes. One with stuck rings with so much blow by coming out the the oil fill hole it was like a hair dryer with oil mist coming out! But anyway, we'd pour in about 1qt of Kerosene (exactly as mentioned above) and occasionally start then idle the engine until at temp. We'd do a few cycles of this, let it sit over night, then a few more cycles. Drain. Change the filter. Add new oil and filter.

One one old car with stuck rings, we assumed this free'd a few rings, but not all. The "hair dryer air flow" from the oil fill hole was cut in half, but not eliminated.

Not sure about Mineral Spirits in an engine though. I thought that was a no-no. IDK. Thought kerosene wouldnt harm seals becasue its closely related to gas/deisel/fuel oil.

In 1982 I had a 77 E-150 Ford van with a 351. I was running Arco graphite oil in it and had no problems. Then, I started to hear about problems that some people were having, true or not. I decided to flush out the engine. On the advice of a old farmer friend, I drained the oil and changed the filter and filled with just #2 fuel oil. Ran the cold engine at idle for a couple of minutes and repeated the whole thing again. Then filled with whatever oil I had at the time. Never had a problem with the Van for years.

1 quart will do it but their are much better products out their. In the old days a lot of guys would actualy fill the crankcase full and start the engine. Once the oil presure went to zero they would drain it and refill. This is back in the 1950's though when 50,000 miles was high milage on a lot of engines. I would use an engine flush like Golden Eagle,Amsoil,SeaFoam, B12 etc... if all you want is a cheap solvent flush. 15-30 minutes at fast idle is about the norm for flush's. Auto-Rx though would be the way to go if you really want to clean it and do it gently.

How often to you change your oil? Is it using oil? I really don't (IMHO) think because an oil turns dark that it's necessarily a bad thing. Am I wrong?

That sounds reasonable. #2 diesel at 104F is around 2 to 4.5 cSt, depending on the spec. A bit cooler, but still warmer than room temp and it should be the same viscosity as 30 weight oil in the mid 250F temperature range.
