kendall semi-synthetic 10w30 4100 miles in grand cherokee

this is my second report on my 1997 grand cherokee with 126k on it.i had great results using regular valvoline maxlife 10w30, but i wanted to give kendall semi-synthetic a try.

COMMENTS: We dont normally find that oil brand makes a difference in wear metals,and thats the case here in your grand cherokee.Wear read almost exactly the same, and the 1 ppm difference you see in a couple of metals is not significant enough to say that one oil is better than the other.The TBN read 2.4 stilll active additive left.oil was in good shape physically, containing no moisture,fuel,or coolant.The air and oil filters are working well.NICE ENGINE !!either oil will work fine,we suggest using the leas expensive one.

oil filter used was a purolator plus the only additive i added at the begining was 8oz of max life oil protector,maybe thats why kendall semi was up to maxlife.maxlife is around 2.60 a qrt and kendall semi is 1.59 at biglots. so what do you think?
I must really have one of the best 4.0 engines as far as wear goes. tks

I didn't think that Conoco oils had much moly or boron.

Great report. We don't see many of the Conoco oils.

Looks like a decent oil at a great price. Seems to have held its viscosity nicely over 4,100 miles, and there was enough active additive left that you could've pushed on out to an even 5,000 miles. I'm still waiting to see what these ConocoPhillips oils are capable of without skewing the results with designer snakeoil additives, though. Thanks for posting.

- The nice thing about Blackstone is that they're a company with no particular axe to grind - they report the performance results and maintain a data base for comparisons. Period. What recommendations the company offers in their comments are based on their findings, not oil company hype.

I recall that our dearly departed Stinky was much the same way. He seemed to believe that "Synthetic doesn't help with extended drains" and I happen to agree, ASSUMING that, like him, you spend all of your time around engines that take 15W40 HDEOs...
I'm really thinking additive depletion is what kills oils, not the base oil failing, barring turbos or Toyota sludgemasters.

Even in the absense of having specified a TBN, low values of insolubles (partially oxidized fuel and oil fragments), and high values of calcium (or sodium in the case of current EM formulations) suggest sufficient remaining active additive. I just don't see the need for supplements in most cases. They can't hurt, but that's not the same as saying they actually accomplish anything. Fortunately for those who disagree, there're plenty of 'em out there.

I guess my $1.48 a quart TropArtic semi-synthetic oil will serve me just fine. Heck, I'm starting to think I might shave 20 cents a quart off that and start using SuperTech oils instead.

i guess they ment between kendall and maxlife for this engine

I think that Stinky, as did Doug Hillary, basically said that there is no difference in wear between a synth and a dino. The advantages, in their primary environment, was down time.

There is no "magic" oil. If there was ...people would buy it. Synths are not justified if the service interval is not long enough ..or the environmental/serice conditions are not severe enough.


Yes, ..this is the lowest wearing 4.0 engine that I've ever seen ..regardless of oil weight. I wonder how much the MLEP had to do with it.

thanks for all your comments,been that im getting up into high mileage am just going to keep running valvoline maxlife (regular)just to hopefully prevent oil leaks wich i do not have right know tks
