Hi and Thanks,

I am new to this forum, forgive me if this has been talked about before. I have a 2004 Porsche Boxster S, I was thinking of installing a K&N oil filter, I use Mobil 1 synthetic oil in it, are there any pros or cons that might be of interest to me.

Hi Jim

The K&N is a good filter. It has been referred to as a $5.00 filter in a $10.00 box. You can make up your own mind. The Purolator Pure One and NAPA Gold, for example, are also in the same league, and not as pricy.

My mother is a Dickson. Which part of Canada are you from? Some of my moms family settled around Cardston.

Another supporter of the Purolator PureOnes and NapaGold here. I believe I've also read that the K&N and Mobil 1 filters are very similar but with the Mobil filter being cheaper.

Actually, the K&N uses a traditional cellulose filter media that is impregnated with phenolic(sp?)resin. The resin helps to keep the fibers in place so proper flow is constant and it resists heat better than other types of glue used in filter contruction. The K&N also uses a metal core to help prevent the filter media from collapsing( ala Fram ).

The M1 filter uses a combination of synthetic fibers and "natural" fibers. They don't reveal the type but my guess is similar to cellulose which is often made from wood fiber but again that is just a guess.

Last I knew Champion Labs made both the K&N and Mobil 1 filters for the respective mfg's. Champion Labs makes some of the best filters. Around here the K&N and M1 filters all run the same approx price = $9-$12 Both are excellent, premium, filters.

I personally run K&N filters. M1 is an excellent filter but I can't get by the fact ExxonMobil is the parent company. I won't buy their gas, oil/fluids, nor their filters.

Wix and Napa Gold( same filter with different paint job )are made by Dana and are excellent as well. About 1/2 the price of K&N and M1. I don't think Wix/NG are quite as good as K&N and M1 filters but they are really good none the less.

I pay just under $9 for a K&N through a speed shop I have dealt with for 20 some years.

As opposed to the E-Core Champion filters? Everything else I've seen has the metal core so its nothing special.

I've heard this quite frequently around here and had believed it for some time but my recent findings show "similar" but different. My below mentioned Quotes were posted earlier this week in another forum here on BITOG.

Napa has a lot of filters under their own name. Gold, Silver, Pro Select, Nascar, etc... I worked at a Napa back in 98 and it seems they had another version then too. They did not have Pro Select as I recall so that may be the replacement for the Silver line which I no longer see offered.

The Gold filters however were the exact same thing as the Wix and have been rigth along to my knowledge. Unless it was changed very recently. I do see where they list cellulose for the filter media on the Gold filters BUT Wix also lists cellulose for their media as well. "Glass Enhanced" cellulose to be exact. They list Paper under the application and cellulose under the product info.

Actually, paper/cellulose = same thing really. Cellulose is the most common material used to make filter media and is referred to as paper. Most cellulose media is made from wood fiber just as paper comes from wood fiber( pulp ).

Click on the link below. It will bring up a blow up view of the Wix filters. Put your mouse arrow on the filter media and click. It will bring up a description of it.
