I was solemnly informed once that water always flows North to South. Always.
My response that no, water always flows downhill until it reaches sea level was met with open-mouthed shock.

So the idea was that since North is higher than South on our maps, logically the water would flow from North to South?
When I was a kid, my geography teacher would get pis sed off if he asked for a river, and you showed it from the sea/ocean to the other end. He never said why so it took us some time to realize why.
Apparently. And probably because the Cape Fear River and it's drainage is generally oriented north-south. I think this and the Mississippi are the only two river systems this genius was familiar with. I told him of the south-north flow of the Nile, and he told me I was mistaken.
