The NY weather dude is talking about the storm that's headed their way. The "More Like August" banner is what got my goat.

Umm, Mr Weather dude, it's September 6th. That means that August was only 6, count 'em SIX, days ago. Nature doesn't have calenders. In fact, I think nature laughs at our calendars.

Now if he was to say "More Like November" then he's got a point. I find this to be grade-school like in how it talks-down to the audience.

What would pacifism have to do with the seemingly obligatory condescension T&S is talking about?
Maybe you mean to refer to pacifiers somehow?
Eveybody needs their Binky?

Dunno where you live. or what the weather is like there. But in these 'ere parts, summer ends on Labor Day. And there is an immediate change in the weather, usually noticeably cooler and drier.

I'm glad you brought this up T&S, I was just about to start a thread asking for the official date of when Fall season starts. Does anyone know by the way?

Summer actually ends Sept. 22 this year. At least Astronomical Summer, this is the Autumnal Equinox, when day and night are equal for a split second.
But I always feel like Labor Day ends the season too.

On the lake where we boat, Laborday ends the boating season,,,,,,THAT'S why wife and I are going for a 3 day weekend starting today!!!! All the idiots have gone home!!

Take it easy. There are far more important things in this life to be upset about than a graphic on local TV weather forecast.

Meteorological fall starts Sep-1.

Wikipedia says Fall starts September 23 for some strange reason.

That's the Autumnal Equinox, Sept. 23, 2007, 5:51 A.M to be a bit more precise. The official seasons start on the 4 equinoxes. Weather patterns don't.

I DREAM of a climate like that. . . .

If we see much fall at all here in The Swamp, it won't be until nearly Thanksgiving. For a couple of days, that is -- during which the inhabitants all say, "Durn, it's cold!" when it's barely dropping to 55 F. at night, and then the whole place sags back into warm wet stickiness.

It snowed on Xmas Day in '04. That was the last good-to-remember weather event here in years.

Where have I heard that before?

BUT...there are only two equinoxes. Two Solstices begin Winter and Summer.

I don't get it.

The map shows the forecast for Saturday.

If you've had any basic meteorology, or watch the weather forecast maybe 5 times, you'll know that air circulates clockwise around high pressure, and counter clockwise around low pressure.

New York is on the warm side of an approaching storm system/cold frontal passage with high pressure overhead. In between these differing atmospheric pressure areas, strong southerly winds will develop. IT'S GONNA BE WARM, maybe even HOT, LIKE AUGUST (in general, it's hotter and windier in August than September, no?) (Saturdays high is supposed to be around 88 degrees.)

Seems like a good forecast and picture to me!!!

As the angle of the sun moves from the northern hemisphere to the southern, then back again creating the seasons, mid latitude jet streams follow, and consequently storm systems that ride the jet stream. That's why it's like, more rainy and stormy in spring and early summer (IN GENERAL - lets not go into the B.S. about how you got flooded in mid August in Texas), as the jet stream is centered more over the mid latitudes. As the angle of the sun approaches the summer solstice, the jet stream ends up for instance compared to the United States, more along the border or into Canada/higher latitudes. This is also why the strongest convection of the year (ie, the severe weather season IN GENERAL, starts out in the southern plains in early spring and moves north as summer progresses).

This is a fun thread. No expertise needed today.
Equinox [equal nights] mark 2 seasonal events ... one is named Vern and the other is Autumn, and Solstice's mark the other 2 seasonal events ... longest and shortest daze of the year. Do you know that the earth is farthest from the sun in the hot, long northern summer ... and surprise, the earth is closest to the sun during the coldest northern winter day? That phenom was answered up there with the tilt response.
Well, that's my response for 2007 ... takes me up to 7.
Visit weather underground (wunderground.com)- My station is KCABUENA1 ... back to my LC20 and FP60.
