It does seem the API is a tool of the oil producers, there to help the customer feel better if not always actually be better off...

Maybe we should use 5 quarts all from different manufactures when we change to insure a reasonable oil change.
I seriously doubt that any of the brands we commonly discuss here, were involved.
Per the May 2005 Lube Report Article API licenses approximately 7000 products for 530 companies, worldwide.
Scroll down thru the list of API Licensed Products to get an idea of the size of this licensing program.
IMHO, when the array of possible products is viewed, 11 non-conforming products out of 611 sampled, with only 2 significant "deviations" is a pretty good track record.

This goes back to stuff I have talked about in the past. I have heard that in the past at least the government did occasional random sampling of motor oils and bench tested the oils to see if they contained adequate chemical additive content, that the oils were of the correct labeled viscosity, etc.
There were motor oils failing to meet the requirements in this testing. Which just goes to show that the API and the SAE do not appear to really offer much protection to the public when it comes to motor oil quality. If poor quality motor oil that can damage engines is really being sold to the public, and if nothing is done about it, that is a scandal.

The API is coming across as a bit of a joke on this one. They should publish the names of the offenders and require a recall.
Out of hundreds of different oils tested, you'd think the ones that failed would be "el cheapo, never heard of it" oil sold at Aunt Granny's Grocery store. I doubt the offenders were name-brand giants like Pennzoil, Castrol etc.
As I read the article, we don't even know what country the noncompliant oils were found in.
