Just how critical is changing the fuel filter?

"Easy" should include not rusted fittings. I liked GM's nylon lines with quick connects-- just knock the sand out and have at it.

If there are rusty threads on the fittings, those can fail too. Rusty lines add to the problem, should get those too. And the brake lines that run next to them. And the snapped off bleeders. On and on it goes....
 
Had a grey whale 91 Caprice Wagon that suffered from a clogged fuel filter. Only had 100K miles. As eljef noted, an easy change after wiping the sprayed out gasoline from my eyes.
