I've noticed on here than when discussing mono-grades, many of you don't differentiate between the different kinds of such oil. For instance, someone ask about using SAE 40 in an old gasoline engine, and many chime in about how it's only for Detroit 2-strokes. That's wrong though, as there's at least four different kinds of 40, as well as 30 and 50.
Detroit 2-stroke diesels require a CF-2 rated SAE mono-grade, preferably 40, such as Delo 100. I have a case of Delo 400 SAE 30 at home, which is rated CF/SJ, and clearly says on the back label, "Delo 400 mono-grade oils are NOT recommended for Detroit Two-Stroke Engines". Ok, so that's two kinds of monogrades, CF-2 and CF/SJ dual rated. Then you've got your API SN mono-grades, such as Pennzoil or Castrol, which are only for gasoline engines. If you look, house brands like Super Tech, Traveller's, and Napa SAE 30's and 40's are also SN, gasoline rated only. Finally, you've got your Non-Detergent mono-grades, which are most often found as house brands, but are still available from brands like Kendall and Valvoline. I suppose you could add racing mono-grades as a subcategory to the gasoline only oils, and are typically rated SG to SL. So, that about sums it up.
P.S.
Dual rated mono-rades are also available as 10W and 20, in addition to the grades listed above. I've seen non-detergent 10W and 20W-20. Gas only race oils are available as thin as 5w, and as thick as 70. Now, I think that about covers it.
