I pulled a rearend housing out of a 340 Duster at a yard north of Denver. They had goats on the property, so the only tall weeds were thistles. The rearend had goat hair stuck to the greasy parts.
Looked at a Pontiac Ventura in Indiana, hoping to transplant an engine into it. The yard was too close to the Ohio River, which had just flooded. The rear footwells were giant ice cubes.
That Pontiac engine eventually went into a Nova, and years later I went looking for a Ventura fan shroud and radiator support. I was in Mississippi by then, and stumbled across a yard just the other side of nowhere. There was a Ventura, but it was so covered with vines that I could barely open the hood. Most of those cars will never be seen again. I must say the yards out west are more fun to look around in. Plastics are fried by the UV, but metal parts are in better shape and the cars aren't just generally rotten. You also don't have to worry about getting trapped in kudzu. I have come away from some yards with more photographs than parts.
At my old hometown junkyard, there was an aluminum Buick V8 block in the can pile. I also saw the owner's son catch his hair on fire while putting a cam in my friend's car. Fun times.
