So many people, especially on the Mercedes Forums, think Mobil 1 0w-40 is unique. It ain't... Seems like Factory-Fill is M1 0w-40 only on AMG.

If you'll note, the 229.5 list is much shorter. And Mobil 1 0w40 is "unique" in that it's the only 229.5 oil readily available OTC in the US.

229.3 isnt anythign special, noone ever said it was. I have done a detailed analysis into the actual specs of 228 and 229.x oils,and Ill tell you that every HDEO that meets 228.3 also meets 229.3
The HD 228.x specs are very close but more stringent than the 229 ones.

228.5 is uneard of in the US at least, and 229.5 is the same only with an ACEA and fuel economy/sludge stipulation. They are quite stringent, and the oils that meet it are few and far between, especially in the US.

I have no doubt that a GC or delvac 1 would meet the specs, however MB doesnt test many oils, and the list gets shorter with each iteration. Note that oils do get dropped too; the latest M1 15w-50 is no longer 229.1 rated.

M1 0W40 ff is also all Porsche Turbo's, and Aston Martin. Dodge Viper too but not sure what viscosity.

Looks to be that M1 0w-40 has an even longer service interval, MB 229.5 = 30,000km...but. This spec was just introduced in Summer 2002, who knows how quickly other oil will attempt pass this sequence. Sounds like M1 0w-40 has a lot to offer, maybe it is better than D1. I have seen reports of sludging WITH M1 0w-40 at factory FSS intervals. I still am trying to decide on oil for Dad's 2000 C280. Once a year sounds better than waiting for FSS to kick in. If the car looks sludgy, I will run some Delvac 1300 for the summer to clean it up a bit. I just got some GC out of storage for him...who knows what to do, just let him buy his own 0w-40, I guess.

where can i find a list of the 229.5 and 228.5 oils? and who verifies the oils pass the standards, the oil manufacturers, or mercedes?

Where have you seen M1 0W-40 to sludge? Never heard of this before, but I find this interesting.

I've run M1 0W-40 before and it used to be my favorite oil, but after running GC and now D1, I like these better.

With GC and D1, the engines seem to run more smoothly... must be the esters. These oils seem to cling better too, which would seem important to me for engines with timing chains.

One of the experts on this site opined that M1 0W-40 is just the 0W-30 thickened up a bit (with shear-happy VIIs)

Good, because I want to use the Delvac 1300S 15w-40 for 6 months in summer. Does anyone think the Mobil 1 5w-40 on the list is D1/SUV?
