Looking for a better additised oil for my noisy toyota Yaris. The cam/ pistons seem to headed down the same path as our dead rav4 on SM GF4. See any problems running the older SL rated 10w30 deere small engine oil in my car? Synpower or syntec dont seem to cut it. I would try rotella cj4 10w30 but I am assuming the deere is a bit thinner. And no, I dont want to run GC or PP (at this juncture)

What are you basing this conclusion on? Increasing noise levels? How did your RAV4 die?

Cheers,

Jeff

Have you considered Rotella T 5w40 ?
Very Robust oil, and it's only 19 bucks a gallon at WM.
Or you could also go with Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40 22 bucks a gallon at WM.
What happened to your rav ? I've seen you post that it died around 56k. What happened ? Did it overheat ? The AZ series engines are known for waterpumps going bad on the factory coolant.

I think there's more going on here than what kind of oil is in your RAV4 or Yaris, i've changed the oil on plenty of these at work with well over 100,000 miles using conventional 5w30 motor oils. More details please?

Started having piston slap noise, then on and off TC tensioner stuck untensioned, then valve clatter when warm. Then High oil usage. Another dealer said 6 valves wher out of spec (loose) and would cost over $600 to fix IF the cam, was not worn. Then the water pump leaked during a -15 deg cold start week. Everything was fine until the dealer near her office did an OC - I suspect they put 20wt in - but not verified. Its my wifes car, so one day we went to inlaws in her car and I said, "man your engine is very noisy" And the Shouting and crying started.
-
I did a couple of OC's with Japan denso 90915-10004 - I had TC sticking and excessive noise problems with the batch of Thailand denso 90915-YZZf1. Thought is was a fluke - but happened over and over again on my yaris and the rav at OC. Ended up trading the rav this winter due to blowout prices on the Subaru $18700 out the door. Just put some Red bottle HM 10w30 in to quiet it for the trade. Hope YOU didnt buy it. I posted the VIN on here if someone wants to check the service records.

Feel it too thick for the yaris - the RT Cj4 10w30 would be boarderline thick.

Its definately not an SM oil. Any good CJ-4 oil will be higher then SM as well but the ACD is thinner then most.

no I was going to just get the lawnmower oil - Homedepot had a blowout on the SL, the new stuff is SM. Just came back from there - its all gone. Who would think!

I don't own any Toyota's personally (all Honda's) but i've been running Valvoline Synpower 5w30 in my Grandmother's Toyota Solara V6, which I think is the same engine, for the past two years with no problems.

You have to strike while the iron is hot on blowout deals. Whats your plan now?

Whats your plan now?

Don't know about his plan but mine is to go get my hip boots and shovel for this thread.

I've had great luck running Pennzoil Conventional 5w30 in my friends '06 Corolla. 100k
No piston slap, or valve noise, no problems with the timing chain tensioner. Always run Pennzoil Conventional 5w30 since new.
It has the 1ZZ-FE that is very similar in design to the 1NZ-FE in your Yaris. Have you tried it yet ?
I'm gonna ask my dad about the symptoms you mentioned for both your Rav, and your Yaris. He is a Toyota MDT at IRA. He's been working on Toyota's for 30 years. I can let you know if he's seen a trend. Also if you had the Rav serviced at IRA, I may be able to have dad pull the RO to get the tech's comments if you like.
Unfortunately he only has access to RO's at IRA Manchester. If it was another dealership, then I can't get the tech's comments.
Also how many miles are on your Yaris ?

+1 Deep deep Male Bovine Manure.

The mower oil wont hurt your engine at all. But if it's clacking and raising cane I'd use the 15W40 oil as already suggested to quiet it down. Rotella 5W40 might be another option if it gets really cold in your neighborhood.

Just started up my 08 Rav4 with Pennzoil Platinum 5w20. It sounds like a Toyota 4cyl engine. If you open the hood you can hear mechanical noise. Just like my old Lexus RX330, My 08 lexus ES350 and my 08 4Runner.

Some Honda engines (like mine) are notorious for noisy fuel injectors as well. Nature of the beast.

The Yaris has 26K right now. The Rav was serviced at IRA Manchester, IRA Tewksbury and Mainly at Hurlbert Epping. 05 RAV 4 VIN is JTEHD20V056046507. Yaris has not been in for anything other than a tire change. Just wondering if any one got the engine repaired or they're just dealing with the racket and oil consumption. Thanks.

I used Pennzoil conventional to accelerate the breakin b4 going to syn (Motul 8100 econergy SL, A1/A5/B5 5w30. Then Valvoline 10w30 synpower in the summer, then castrol syntec NOW. The syntec ran great for a week then started sounding like it was "thinning". Car lost revvability and got noisy. I give up on SM thats why Im looking for an approprite weight Sj/Sl power equipment/tractor oil. The Pennzoil conventional didnt provide high rpm high stress performance of other oils I used (seat of the pants method).
