What was John Deere's opinion on engine oil quality in 1926?

Our neighbor in Iowa has many restored John Deere tractors, including this 1926 model D. John Deere thought it was so important to change the engine oil in a timely fashion that they put a placard on in front of the operator so they wouldn't forget. My favorite part of the instructions is to wash the sludge out of the crank case with kerosene.

Well, detergent oils weren't a thing, so I suppose a good rinse wash was about as good as it was going to get back then.

Love those Johnny Poppers! I had a 1939 B styled for a while; fun thing to putter-putt around on.

My father has a 1935 B on steel he inherited from his uncle that he restored. He has the cultivator attachment that mounts to the frame, too. I can remember my great uncle using it to turn over potatoes when I was about 5. The fresh earth, dirty hands and that distinctive popping sound. Good times.
